Expert Analysis
Colby Giacubeno | Prep Hoops Scout
This Thrill backcourt rotation is filled with tough, rugged guards who should do a great job of playing the style that program director/head coach Mookie Dobbins thrives with. Wood brings a nice balance of size, bulldozing physicality and a soft touch when he has space from the outside to make for a tough assignment. He’s more than willing to get his nose in the mix for 50/50s or rebounds outside of his area to win extra possessions and runs the floor with intent to make plays in transition at both ends. On Saturday, he came up huge for Thrill with his shotmaking prowess. It seemed like whenever the ball touched the paint or quick reverse swing was executed, Wood was on the receiving end in the corner or the wing ready to knock it down. He’ll be a crucial piece to this roster once UAA play rolls around if he can maintain his floor-spacing skills to allow others like Darrell Davis and Samartine Hill to expose driving lanes.

-Wood is one of the-if not the-fastest prospects in the state with the ball in his hands in the open floor. Whether he is in transition, the secondary break, coming off of step up screens or middle PnR– he’s always putting pressure on the rim by hitting his matchup with simple crossovers to get to his spots. As the season went along, our scouts thought he became more and more comfortable making decisions in tight spaces in the key–using that scoring gravity to create for his bigs on the weak side block. His athleticism and tenacious play at both ends of the floor make him a prospect that local LM/MM need to know in the 2027 class.

19p 6r 3a 1s 1b vs MSJ
-Wood’s dynamic athleticism in the open court really showed in a standout performance against MSJ. Wood rotated down to the block to punch a big’s layup attempt off the glass, scored on several C2C drives at the rim, flew upcourt to draw two in transition before he dropped it off to a big for an easy two, hit a big turn-around 3 just before the halftime buzzer, and scored off the and1 layup through the contact in the 2H. Wood showed a bit more of his scoring bag as a shooter off the bounce or off of movement throughout the afternoon, with much smoother dribble pick-ups in traffic to navigate through the key or stop on a dime for a pull-up jumper. The athleticism combined with a competitive drive/motor that always run hot should make him a name to know this summer for local D1s.

Cam played with physicality and purpose while consistently getting to the areas he wanted on the floor. He scored through traffic on consecutive possessions early and set the tone with strong finishes inside. The confidence Cameron plays with inside translates directly over to the perimeter as he buried a few long-range jumpers. He stayed aggressive all game long and did a great job drawing fouls, per usual from his aggression and consistent production. Cam’s downhill pressure helped open the floor and kept the defense on its heels.

-An absolute athletic menace, Wood has really ramped up his game as one of the leaders for a Calvert Hall group that has been in most of their games against the BCL elite. Wood’s explosive athleticism as a shot-blocker, finisher above the rim, and as a lightning-fast guard in the open court have really raised his profile at the local level. If he can create for others off the bounce and shoot more efficiently in the halfcourt– I think he will start to make his name known at the national level as a prospect that college coaches need to prioritize.

18p 12r 1a 3s vs John Carroll
-Wood set the tone early with a drive right down the middle of the defense to score at the rim. Wood is a really good rebounder for his size/position and came up with some huge O boards in traffic over bigs before finishing around the rim. He’s especially dynamic in transition as a ballhandler that uses the glass well to finish at odd angles over the defense. Wood also has a nose for the basketball, beating his matchup to loose balls for steals or long rebounds before racing in the opposite direction. Expect him to continue to climb our rankings in our next update coming next week.

-Wood was probably my favorite find of the event as the standout performer showed that he can do a little bit of everything out there. He’s an explosive leaper, had a huge 1-handed spike in transition and showed how quickly he can get off the floor by high-pointing post entry attempts for steals. He hit a nice 1-dribble pull in his defender’s face while attacking a closeout. Wood showed active hands defensively and has pretty good awareness/ vision getting the ball to switch ends quickly before the defense can react. He timed sprints to the baseline well to come up with help side blocks and was on point with his rotations at the defensive end of the floor. He showed his ability to use his scoring gravity to then create for teammates with a middle drive to the top of the key to hit a corner shooter with a hook pass. He saved his best for last though, scoring on a really tough off-balance pull-up 3 in transition to cut it to 3 under 30 seconds left in the game. Should debut pretty high in our rankings update next month!
