About Akol
Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
Nyok continues to show steady improvement with each evaluation, and his long term upside remains very intriguing. While still developing, his combination of mobility, length, athleticism, and timing allows him to be increasingly productive. He finishes well around the rim, rebounds outside of his area, alters shots in the lane, and runs the floor with purpose. With good hands and improving instincts, Nyok is trending toward becoming a prospect at the highest levels of college basketball.

Nyok is an imposing presence with his mile long arms he looks like a sky-scraper when he is standing in front of the bucket. Nyok showed that he could finish around the bucket and is a threat from the dunker spot. He does a good job running the floor. He finds ways to stay active. Hoping Nyok can find some way to throw weight on his frame.

Akol missed the summer circuit last summer and basically the first half of the regular season recovering from an knee injury. But once Akol returns to the court. He showed his length, and quickness was evident in the Maryland Private School State Tournament in March. In the game against DeMatha finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block in 19 minutes of play against DeMatha in a 75-63 defeat. Nyok is an extra-long athletic center who has plenty of potential and upside. Nyok runs the floor effortlessly, he does a good job of blocking/changing shots around the basket and offensively he can score with his back to the basket and shows a soft touch out to 10-12 feet. Wiry frame will need to get stronger to compete against big man that brings a lot of girth to the table.

The impact wasn’t as loud or consistent as his near double-double in the second round, but Nyok still showed glimpses of the talent that has him firmly on breakout watch entering the grassroots season. It’s just so rare to find prospects his size who move with so much flexibility and twitch (even just weeks back from a year-long knee injury), not to mention with a baseline IQ for the game and consistent motor to match. Despite his slender frame, Nyok is willing to consistent mix it up inside using his enormous length to protect the rim and high-point rebounds. He showed nice touch on his finishes inside, though playing with more physicality is an area of note to work on moving forward. Despite the modest production it’s clear the ceiling with Nyok is extremely high.

No prospect left a bigger impression on the day than Nyok, as we’d seen glimpses of his talent in the past in lesser-structured settings but had yet to see him put it all together given the time he’s missed due to injury. Now healthy and playing extended minutes, Nyok posted a near double-double while showing the versatility, motor, and mobility that make him such an enticing prospect. He’s still catching back up to the speed of the game but had multiple sequences that point to upside for the highest levels. We’ll be monitoring his progress closely into the summer as he gets back to 100% with a real chance to break out on a national scale.
