Lyons continued his awesome summer this past Saturday. The 6-foot guard has always had the quickness, but he simply looks more comfortable making decisions in the paint and getting to his spots than he ever has before. He blows by opponents effortlessly, and he has become more consistent as both a finisher and a mid-range maestro, so he’s a threat from a lot of different areas. Lyons can dominate the game at a moment’s notice with his burst and athleticism, and I expect him to light the MIAA on fire this season for Newton North.

I don’t think there’s a player that has improved his stock more in the last couple months than Lyons. The 6-foot guard is probably one of the quickest players in the entire state when it comes to his first-step at the point of attack—he gets to wherever he wants on the court. This summer, he seems to have improved his pull-up jumper from the mid-range and has become more confident as a finisher with both hands, too, which makes him a far more dangerous player. The three-point shot still needs to come along, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lyons be the leading scorer for Newton North this season and bring them to the state tournament.

Yesterday was pretty easily the best I’ve ever seen Lyons play. The 6-foot guard was the quickest player in the gym and got into the paint at will because of his first-step explosiveness and tight handle. Once he got there, he converted on his pull-up jumper at a higher rate than I’ve seen in the past and also showcased some really special finishes at the cup with both hands. The three-point shot and table-setting ability still needs to come along, but the rising senior can get to WHEREVER he wants on the court and is impossible to stay in front of. I thought high D3 was a stretch for Lyons, but a big-time season at Newton North could change that.
