Varano was a table-setter for last year’s Needham squad, but with tons of graduates out the door, the 5-foot-10 point guard has a runway to significantly more offensive responsibility. And based on his performance this summer, I think he’s ready for it. He was phenomenal at Hoop Group’s Academic camp as both a scorer and facilitator—he’s lightning-quick off the bounce and has the ball on a string. The rising senior also plays phenomenal point-of-attack defense and can guard up a position also. Varano wasn’t an all-star last season, but I would be shocked if he doesn’t get those honors this year.
