The day started with a dominant showing by Minford as they showed why they’re projected to be one of southeast Ohio’s best next season. Their 2025 duo of Kayser and Myles Montgomery Myles Montgomery 5’9″ | PG Minford | 2025 State OH got things going early and often. Kayser made plays on both ends with a couple blocks and then knocking down mid-range shots often. I like his touch from that area but would like to see him attack the rim more often and try and finish at the cup. When Kayser was getting shots at the rim, it was typically off lob passes and he finished an and-1 layup off a lob pass that was one of the highlights of the day. Expect Minford to win a ton of games in 2023-24 with Kayser being one of the leaders of the team.
Perkins has had a really strong spring and start to summer by producing no matter the scene. After being one of Nova 16’s top players, he was the standout performer on Westerville North on Thursday. As usual, Perkins is a walking paint touch when he’s driving to the hoop with his shiftiness and change of speed ability. Defensively he was a pest to opposing ball handlers as well. The biggest thing he showed on Thursday was improved shooting off the catch, showing that he’s capable of playing on or off the ball. Scholarship programs will want to check Perkins out when they start to focus on the 2025 high school class.
Brown is the one returning starter for Olentangy Orange and looks comfortable with the big shoes he has to fill from the graduated seniors. Really showing some development as a passer, Brown was excellent at handling pressure and setting his teammates up. Developing physically as well, it’s promising to see Brown be able to use his body to score at the rim over smaller defenders. I project a major breakout for Brown this winter as he becomes a household name in central Ohio.
New Albany is led by a new head coach as Tim Casey makes the move after leaving Upper Arlington. Casey had his new look squad looking sharp and Jackson was as big a reason as any on Thursday. I like the feel that Jackson brings as a wing with his play-making ability and how he quickly moves the ball. As a transition finisher Jackson had some tough finishes at the rim with both hands against shot blockers. Defensively, Jackson defended up positionally by guarding opposing bigs on an undersized team. Jackson looks like a potential breakout candidate to compete for all conference honors as a Junior.
Finefrock was on fire from long range for Massillon Jackson on Thursday. One of the elite shooters in the state, he doesn’t need much time or space to let it fly and make you pay. In summer games without scouting reports, Finefrock can get a couple up early before the defense knows what they’re up against and then it can turn into a long game of chasing him off the 3-point line. After knocking down maybe six 3’s, Finefrock helped his team get a big win over Westerville North in the afternoon part of the day. For Finefrock, improving physically is the next step in his development to make him more of a threat off the bounce and be able to defend tougher match-ups.
Highlights
A grassroots teammate of Finefrock with Gurus of Go, Gross is one of the bigger spring risers in the state. Gaining confidence finishing around the rim and doing more with the ball in his hands, Gross was efficient all day and made some impressive passes to shooters. A big time athlete, Gross threw down some slams in traffic on Thursday and has also impressed at individual prospect camps as well. Expect to see Gross’ ranking improve during the next 2025 rankings update that’ll be coming out before the end of the month.
