7 Wing/Forward Stock Risers From July Live Periods

Live period has concluded! Now the analysis begins. Cornell is getting better very quickly. The 6-foot-7 wing has long arms and phenomenal athleticism and coordination for his size, so he's an above-the-rim finisher who can also use finesse when he needs to. During the July Live Periods, he showed off an improved handle and outside shot, which made him more of a threat from the perimeter and paired quite well with his ability to attack the cup aggressively. Cornell is only a rising junior and still goes to Stonington High School, so I wouldn't be surprised to see his recruitment skyrocket once he decides to do a year or two at prep school.Extremely bright future ahead for one of the more intriguing prospects in BCRI's program.     McGrath showed off an extremely well-rounded skillset while playing up for Middlesex Magic's 16u team during the July Live Periods. The 6-foot-8 forward has a super versatile offensive game that starts with his ability to muscle defenders in the paint and finish effectively with his strong left hand. But he can also make shots from the outside quite consistently and has the ball handling and feel necessary to drive closeouts and play within the flow of the offense. For a rising sophomore at that size, he's about as skilled and polished as you'll find. This season is going to be a breakout for him at Thayer Academy.     Mweli is a freak athlete with long arms, a high-octane motor, and special athleticism. The 6-foot-8 wing is literally built out of a lab to play division 1 basketball at the wing position. But what's intriguing is he also has a budding outside shot and some really solid touch around the hoop—better than you'd expect given his athletic tools. Mweli was dominant for Team New England during July's Live Period but will play his winter ball at Iowa United Prep, so he's not nearly as well known around this area, but his performances during July put him on the map.     I've been high on Cormier for awhile, and he keeps proving me right. The 6-foot-8 forward had an awesome July Live Period for NE Storm HGSL and is going to draw interest from many of the top D3 programs around—and even potentially some scholarship interest—if he keeps up the way he's been shooting the basketball. His release is pure, he can hit it on the move, and he can shoot it quickly, so that combined with his size makes him a serious matchup nightmare. But he's also tougher in the post than people realize and is improving at sliding his feet on the perimeter as a result of playing against better players and having to defend quicker guards. I would bet Cormier ends up at the D3 level, but an amazing year at Proctor could change that.     Palermo played his July Live Period with White Mamba and was an instrumental piece in their dominance. The 6-foot-7 forward is a complete bruiser in the paint and punishes opposing defenders who try to body him down low—he's SO strong and takes contact extremely effectively—but he also has nice footwork and finesse moves that allow him to score in crafty ways as well. Most intriguing are his screening and hand-off instincts, though; he acts as a wonderful offensive hub and creates easy driving lanes for his teammates as a result of his spacial awareness and body positioning. Palermo has also steadily improved his outside shot and has become a threat from downtown, a development that could be quite significant in terms of his recruitment moving forward.     There literally isn't a thing on the basketball floor than Workman doesn't do. The 6-foot-5 wing is a really good outside shooter, but he can also drive closeouts and finish at the rim or stop short for pull-up jumpers if that's what the defense dictates he should do. If you need him to create offense—run pick and roll, score off the dribble, or get into the paint and spray out—he's able to effectively do that, too. On the defensive end, his combination of size and strength allows him to guard a wide variety of players and makes him quite versatile on that end. There isn't a system or team Workman couldn't fit into, and his NYC Honor and MacDuffie School squads are no different.     Nunes was phenomenal for Mass Rivals 16u during the July Live Periods. He probably could've/should've been in the guards article, but he plays bigger than his size and is able to guard a wide variety of players on the defensive end. Offensively, the 6-foot-4 wing has developed into one of New England's most consistent outside shooters, both off the catch and off the dribble, which has made him a significant threat from the perimeter when combined with his ability to attack closeouts and play with pace in the mid-range. He's also an unselfish passer who knows how to get his teammates involved and doesn't over-dribble or take away scoring opportunities from anybody else. Nunes was one of Rivals' best players this season and will be a massive stock riser for Austin Prep during the winter.
