Cornell, a wing out of Stonington High School in Connecticut, jumped 14 spots in this update and now sits at #52 overall in the rankings. The 6’7″ wing is a skilled scorer that can get it done at all three levels. He’s got the ability to create out of isolations on the perimeter, knocks down shots from behind the arc, and uses his length to score efficiently around the rim. Defensively, his length is an asset that allows him to make plays in passing lanes and to protect the rim when coming from the help side. He’ll play on the travel circuit with BCRI.

Cornell really impressed me this weekend. The 6-foot-6 big clearly developed his wing skills this winter and is significantly more comfortable in his body than the last time I saw him. He made some really impressive moves and finishes at the rim on Saturday, including one head-tap dunk and a couple other almost-posters. He has great athleticism, long arms, and the toughness necessary to leap into the air and take contact. Cornell isn’t a consistent outside shooter yet, but his combination of size, length, and athleticism is super intriguing for a prospect his age, and BCRI is the perfect place for those skills to shine. He’ll continue getting better and will be a prime reclass candidate once the time comes.

Reclassifying was literally made for players like Cornell. The 6-foot-6 forward shoots it well from the outside — especially for his size — but also has some solid athletic pop at the rim. He looks more comfortable each time I watch him, and the potential is very clearly there with his combination of shooting touch, size and athleticism. Cornell needs some extra time, though; he’s still learning his body, and an extra year of time in the weight room and reps on the ball will go a long way in his development. He could look A LOT different in a few years, and transitioning to a prep school environment would aid that change and help his college recruitment.

Cornell is 6-foot-6 and extremely long, which makes him a super intriguing long-term prospect when you consider his current skillset. Despite being super tall and skinny, the freshman has great body control in the paint and can finish with touch at the hoop. He can also step out and knock down the three ball, as well as getting to his spots in the midrange and elevating for jumpers. Cornell is at Stonington High School right now, but he hasn’t stayed back yet and I highly doubt he’ll beat public school for too long — I’m sure he’ll be at a local prep school soon enough.

Cornell’s combination of size, length and coordination for his age is pretty rare. Most 6-foot-6 freshmen are still learning their bodies — and don’t get me wrong, so is he — but he has a smoothness to the way he runs that makes me think he’ll continue to get even more athletic and comfortable as time goes on. Most impressive was his shooting touch; he hit multiple high-arc three pointers and his release looks pretty solid. Cornell is definitely a project, but the future is bright for him if he can continue to develop, which I bet he will. Sky’s the limit.
