7 Guard Stock Risers From July Live Periods

The Adidas shoe circuit, 3SSB, held their championships this past weekend. BABC and Mass Rivals, two Massachusetts based teams, competed at the 15u, 16u, and 17u levels—there were also prospects who play their high school hoops in New England, so I had my eyes on them as well. Farrell's tantalizing athleticism was on full display this weekend during Magic 17u HGSL's championship run. The 6-foot-1 guard doesn't tower over opponents or bully them with strength, but he has incredible explosiveness to the rim and a knack for finishing softly off the glass despite how high in the air he is and how fast he's going. The rising St. Mark's senior also has the ability to score from both the mid-range and three-point levels and is a good passer (because you basically can't exist on a Magic Lambros squad without knowing how to make quick decisions and pass the rock). Farrell has D1 football offers, but I'm not convinced he couldn't hoop at that level, too. He walked away with the well-deserved HGSL Championship and MVP.     Quinlan has always been a kid I've been high on, but he continues to refine his game and show his ability to play both on and off the ball. This past weekend, he shot the ball well from three and did a really good job playing off of two feet in the paint, something he's quite good at when he leans into it consistently. He has awesome strength, good passing vision, and a good feel for when to rise up and when to drive the closeout. Quinlan feels like a player on the verge of a scholarship, and I personally think he'll get there soon enough, especially with the opportunity he'll have at Dexter Southfield this coming season.     Kumar is developing into a nice two-way prospect who provides value in a number of ways. Offensively, he has a super quick and accurate shot release that he comfortably takes off the dribble and off of movement—this is the cornerstone of his game on that end—but he can also drive closeouts, is more athletic than people think, and can handle pressure if he needs to. Defensively, he slides his feet very well and is a great help defender when it comes to basket line and stunt positioning. Kumar had a nice weekend for Middlesex Magic HGAL and is going to be a nice role player for Beaver this season.     Ellis-Cipriano impresses me every time I watch him play. I used to be skeptical of his shooting ability but I've seen too many good shooting games at this point to not be convinced—he also showcases an improved ability to shoot catch-high-keep-high shots and generally to get shots off quicker. The rising senior has always had special athleticism at the rim, oftentimes highlighted by dunks and acrobatic finishes. He can play on or off the ball and has an extremely high defensive ceiling because of his athletic and physical tools. Ellis-Cipriano was an important part of BCRI's attack all season—including during both live periods—and he'll look to provide a similar offensive punch for St. Andrews this upcoming season.     Teixeira continues to impress me every time I watch him play at a higher level. When he made the transition to Pomfret, I was skeptical he would still be able to score as efficiently as he did at Bishop Stang—but then he looked awesome during the NEPSAC Showcases. And now the rising junior is tearing up the Pro16 league for Team New England. He has phenomenal change-of-pace dribble moves, but he really just plays at his own speed and never gets sped up by defensive pressure. He gets to his spots in the mid-range and hits shots, he spaces the floor from three, and he makes simple plays for his teammates. I continue to get higher on Teixeira every time I watch him play and think he'll be a very key player for Pomfret this season.     Colson is an offensive engine unto himself. The 5-foot-11 guard is undersized, but he can score from all three levels, is a relentless rim attacker, and has a high basketball IQ. His quickness and ball handling ability allow him to get into the lane, but his passing vision, feel, and humility allow him to consistently make the right play for the team. Colson was at the helm of the offense for Max Levels Elite of the P32 New Balance circuit, and he'll have a good chance to lead the charge at the PG position for Darrow this upcoming season. His performances during live period earned him an offer from Mississippi Valley State University, and more could be coming if he has a good season at Darrow.     Douglas can really score the basketball. The 6-foot-4 guard won't jump off the page with incredible burst, but he beats you with his pace, size, and skill. He has a keen understanding of space and how to use his body, so he's effective as a driver and understands when to attack an opening vs. when to shoot the open shot. His ability to make shots off of movement is impressive, too—he's excellent at backpedaling into threes and knows when to slip or hold the screen and then can get good looks off no matter what he does. Because of his size, he can also take advantage of smaller players in the paint, which he does on the offensive glass and as a cutter. Douglas was awesome for NJ Shoreshots during live period and should be a nice piece for Newman, where he'll fit beautifully into their system because of his IQ and shooting ability.
