These Guards Have Gotten Off To Very Hot Starts In Week 1

Almost a week into the season and the action has already been electric. We've had high caliber matchups, packed gyms and momentum shifting moments. The storyline so far is these guards, who are playing at a different speed and a different intensity delivering monster performances night after night. Even though they are only getting started their firepower is going to keep climbing from here.    Howery absolutely erupted on opening night, torching the floor for 27 points and hauling in 16 rebounds in a flat out dominant, high energy showcase. He took over from the opening tip and was hammering home explosive dunks that sent the gym into chaos. Every big moment belonged to him. Whenever Chap needed a spark or needed a big bucket, Howery delivered. He wasn't just the go to guy, he was the undeniable force of the night     Wells has opened the season on an unstoppable tear, scoring 23 in the opener and erupting for 51 against Lutheran. He's completely locked in and burying deep threes, scoring with polished footwork in the post and finishing through contact. On defense he's been just as dominant, blocking perimeter shots, applying relentless pressure and turning steals into easy transition points. Wells is playing with confidence and a level of two way intensity that makes him one of the most exciting players in the state right now     Murdock is off to a blistering start, dropping 34 and 38 points in his first two games while shooting a ridiculous 64% and 74% from the field. Add in 17 total rebounds, and he's doing everything you could ask for. What makes it even more impressive is the balance in his scoring and he's not just firing from deep. He's attacking defenders, carving his way inside, finishing strong at the rim and knocking down his smooth midrange jumper. Murdock is playing like a complete, unstoppable offensive weapon right now     Weatherspoon has opened the season on another level, dropping 33 and 34 points the second coming with a ridiculous 13-of-14 shooting performance. He puts nonstop pressure on defenses with elite handles and explosive quickness, getting to the rim at will. Once he's there, it's either been a monster dunk or a crafty, acrobatic finish that leaves defenders stunned. Because he's in constant attack mode, defenders are backing off and giving him easy pull up threes that he's burying with confidence. Weatherspoon looks downright unstoppable     Johnson has been running the floor like a true floor general through the first two games. He's seeing passing lanes clearly, delivering crisp feeds to cutters in the paint, or collapsing defenses to create open looks on the perimeter. He's constantly moving without the ball finding space for free threes while keeping defenses off balance. On the other end, he's grabbing rebounds, applying pressure and setting a tone with active hands for steals. Johnson is controlling the game on both ends and setting the standard for his team     Long has been on my radar since the summer, and even with just one game in, it's clear he's a problem for defenses. He opened the season with a strong 31 points, but it's the way he impacts every part of the game that stands out. His vision and defensive quickness led to 5 steals with each one turning into a highlight dunk or a perfect outlet for a teammate. He looks dialed in from three, but it's his fearless downhill attacks and ability to get to the bucket that make him must watch this season. Long is about to take off     Montoya may not be pouring in monster scoring numbers, but through two games he's shown exactly why he's one of the most valuable players on the floor. With 25 points so far, he scores when needed but it's his true floor general presence that sets him apart. He's commanding the offense with poise, using high IQ, elite vision and patience to make the right read every possession. He's putting teammates in perfect scoring situations, controlling the tempo and picking his own spots to attack when the window opens. Montoya is the engine that makes everything run     Pecic has already made a name for himself this summer, and as a true freshman, he's quickly carving out meaningful minutes on varsity. He carried that momentum into the opener, scoring 21 points while mixing tough, physical buckets down low with impressive shooting from deep. He showing poise, confidence and a knack for impacting the game already. Pecic could quickly become one of the team's most dynamic playmakers this season
