Expert Analysis
Duvalier Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Evo is a player who I wanted to be a bit more aggressive at times last season, as he showed flashes of lighting it up when his shot was falling, and he hunted shots, but that took a backseat at times because he wanted to be a true point guard and find open teammates. Well, he’s now forced to take those shots, and this weekend we saw him be able to score with ease. The offense is so centered around him that he decides what kind of shots he takes, he has to be able to score off of the dribble and attack the PnR as well, and that is when he really gets to going. The Northfield offense will go as he allows it as he’s the key to it all. He was the team’s leading scorer, handled pressure, and will also see double teams at times that he has to be ready fo,r and this weekend showed that he could be out for a breakout season.

Montoya has put together a strong season for Northfield and is a special talent with the ball in his hands. He gets to his spots with confidence, using tight handles to create space and control defenders. He’s a reliable three point shooter who makes teams pay for giving him room, and he never shies away from contact when attacking the lane. That toughness and skill make him a dangerous weapon, especially with the City League Tournament raising the stakes

Evo is one of the most entertaining guards we have in the state and is a rare breed as a true PG. Evo is looking to set teammates up, and his feel for the game is what separates him. He’s dangerous in ISO situations, he reads pick and rolls and looks to score. Evo handles pressure and it is tough to press or trap Northfield as a result. He’s putting up 12.5 points, and 3.5 assists a game to start the season, and we expect both of those numbers to increase, especially the assists. Northfield is 2-0 on the year, including a big win over T-Ridg,e and Evo was a reason why. This should be a season where he jumps onto the radar as a marquee name.

Montoya may not be pouring in monster scoring numbers, but through two games he’s shown exactly why he’s one of the most valuable players on the floor. With 25 points so far, he scores when needed but it’s his true floor general presence that sets him apart. He’s commanding the offense with poise, using high IQ, elite vision and patience to make the right read every possession. He’s putting teammates in perfect scoring situations, controlling the tempo and picking his own spots to attack when the window opens. Montoya is the engine that makes everything run

Montoya climbs up in the rankings after putting together an outstanding summer filled with production. Evo is one of the shiftiest guards in the class, he has elite handles, passing instincts, and shot-making ability that other guards in the class lack. He scored at all three levels while still creating for others and what stands out is how consistent he is. Montoya’s leadership, IQ, and confidence give Northfield a steady hand and he will make up one of the top duos in the state His rise is well earned as he’s one of the top guards in the class.

Eva is a guard who has a great feel for the game. He passes teammates open and is a small guard capable of scoring inside. He has an inside-out attack as he shoots the 3-ball to keep defenses honest, but is one of the better iso scorers who creates for himself off the dribble. Once he gets that going and defenses commit, it is when he starts dissecting with passes, and that is when I feel he is at his best. I enjoy when Montoya starts operating as a true PG with his IQ on display, as he starts dealing, as he has a loaded bunch around him for the Roughriders that can light it up. He continues to grow on me.

Evo is a confident PG that allows Northfield’s game to flourish. He shoots the ball well, finishing amongst the trees, and I loved the way that he reads and navigates screens. As a more undersized guard, his ability to come off those with smart-reads for either a dump, kickout, or finish is what separated him all weekend, and he was one of my favorite players to watch on the weekend. He was a consistent scorer, made the right passes, and controlled tempo, and I feel as if Northfield will go as he allows them this year. I loved what I saw from this true point and know that he is a player who will only continue to rise.

Montoya is one of those players you can sometimes take for granted, he just makes the game look easy. After this weekend, there’s no way he’s flying under the radar anymore. Every time he steps on the court, he brings it. He’s the clear leader of his squad and exactly what you want in a point guard. Montoya’s got a smooth handle, takes care of the ball, and constantly sets up his teammates with great looks. This weekend was no different where he was in full control and a major offensive threat. Every time he pulled up from three, it felt automatic. His range was on full display, and he read the defense like a pro, knowing when to take his shot and when to dish it off for an easy bucket. Just a super steady, high-IQ player who makes everyone around him better

A true floor general, Montoya continues to put his teammates in situations to succeed, given his court vision while handling the ball. Adept at leveraging his low center of gravity to change speeds, he keeps opposing defenders guessing at all times. Now at Northfield, he steps into a culture that prioritizes defense and a hard nosed brand of basketball. Given his supreme IQ on both ends of the floor, Montoya does what he can to generate steals in the passing lanes.

Montoya repeatedly proved he is a dynamic shotmaker from anywhere on the floor, bringing about as quick a release as anyone in the class. Adept at pulling up for quick attempts or leveraging his gravity to make the extra pass, the guard is a pure floor general who is set to impress this coming season.
