We got out to the Metro State Camp this past weekend, and there was plenty of talent on display. It was great to see players take a break from the club scene and get us closer to what they will look like during the regular season. The guards are players we've seen for their high school careers, and also to start this Spring, and they look even better now. Let's take a look at guard play.

Montae is silky smooth, and that has always been his calling. A score-first guard that can read defenses and react before they get set, and when the defense takes something away, he can get his shot off. The 3-ball was falling this weekend, and he looks much more mature in his shot selection this season, with a year of being the focal point of the Creek offense. The game slows down for him against Regis, and he found other ways to be effective against East as he gets to his spots, and he's also a very underrated passer. He's willing to make the skip pass, he passes and cuts for open finishes, and is a 3-level scorer who defenses have to know where he's at at all times. Creek won the Platinum division behind the play of their PG, and he picked up an offer from Metro State with his showing throughout the tournament.

Adkins recently jumped to the No.1 player in the 2028 class, and the thing that separates him from the other guards in the state is the intensity with which he plays with. He takes every matchup personally and approaches every matchup with a chip on his shoulder, and that was on display this weekend. I heard he had a battle against Overland, and we saw him against both Denver South and Creek. He refuses to get scored on, he's starting to see that 3-pointer start to hit at a consistent clip, and he knocked down a few in each game we saw on Sunday, and he's a creative scorer around the basket. When he's locked in, there aren't many players in the state that can impact the game like he can, and he's earned his spot.

Evo is a player who I wanted to be a bit more aggressive at times last season, as he showed flashes of lighting it up when his shot was falling, and he hunted shots, but that took a backseat at times because he wanted to be a true point guard and find open teammates. Well, he's now forced to take those shots, and this weekend we saw him be able to score with ease. The offense is so centered around him that he decides what kind of shots he takes, he has to be able to score off of the dribble and attack the PnR as well, and that is when he really gets to going. The Northfield offense will go as he allows it as he's the key to it all. He was the team's leading scorer, handled pressure, and will also see double teams at times that he has to be ready fo,r and this weekend showed that he could be out for a breakout season.

There was so much pressure on Cruz every single night as a freshman playing in a tough conference and having to compete on every single play that he looked like a seasoned veteran right now. He's seen so much of what defenses are going to throw at him, and at Metro State camp was dissecting the defenses. He plays at his own pace, he finds the open man, and is part of every action for the Buffaloes. The team goes as he allows them to go as a true PG who reads the floor, sees plays develop before they happen, and gets teammates involved. We saw plenty of those plays this weekend, and I'm sure that we will continue to see that all season.

Rock Canyon won the state championship a season ago and returns some important pieces from that team that allow it to operate at such a high level. They have chemistry, play unselfishly, and battle hard. A big reason for that is their guard play. [player_tooltip player_id='2592262' first='Cooper' last='Ellwood'] leads the charge and epitomizes all of those things. At the camp, his ability to run the team, push the pace, and take care of the ball was on display. He did have to score it a bit more and be more aggressive as they will need his playmaking abilities. He's one of the few players on the team who can get inside of the defense and open up the offense. He had floaters, knocked down a few shots, and showed up defensively. He's a player who I feel will boost their stock this season, and he had another solid outing at the Metro State camp.
