Once he saw a couple fall, he heated up quickly, providing consistent perimeter scoring. He knocked down shots from deep, punishing defenses that over-helped, and showed advanced playmaking when chased off the line. Quick off the bounce, Mathis finished smoothly at the rim with either hand, keeping defenders on their heels. Over the course of camp he showed off his ability to score it on all three levels of the floor. Smaller guards had issues with his strength and bigger matchups had issues staying in front. His shot selection and discernment when looking to make a play was impressive. He showed great lateral quickness and reflexes in the passing lanes. In trapping and zone situations, he seemed to be one step ahead of the opposition. His crafty handle and high IQ was on display opponents looked to pressure him. His next level understanding of how and when to distribute the ball on time and on target.
