Continue ReadingKutcher had a huge game in the Mustangs’ win over Central DeWitt in the 3A substate quarterfinals, scoring 36 points on 10-22 shooting (6-15 3P, 10-10 FT), with 4 rebounds and 3 assists (all numbers unofficial). A sharpshooting guard with a quick release, he has unlimited range from the arc and the ultimate green light for Mount Vernon. He moves well without the ball in his hands and is probably a better shooter off the catch than the dribble, but he can shoot it off the bounce and create for his teammates as well.
Martin had a below-average offensive game by his standards in the Falcons’ district final win over West Branch – 9 points on 4-8 shooting (0-3 3P), 1 rebound, and 5 assists. But he was fantastic on the defensive end of the floor against Bears star guard Holden Arnaman Holden Arnaman 6’3″ | PG West Branch | 2024 State IA , holding him to 9-21 shooting (1-10 3P). He had 3 steals against the Bears and did a great job getting up into Arnaman, making him work hard to get any look off, and very few, if any, were clean. He moves his feet well on that end of the floor, has quick hands, and knows how to position himself on that end of the floor.
Highlights
A shifty 6-1 guard with length and a quick first step, Garcia had 12 points on 4-9 shooting (0-1 3P, 4-5 FT) and 3 rebounds in the Chiefs’ upset win over Solon on Thursday night. But what stood out most about Garcia’s game was his 6 assists (unofficial). He did a great job getting into the teeth of the Solon defense, getting them to collapse, and then finding either an open shooter on the opposite wing, or a cutting teammate for a layup. He sees the floor well and is a creative finisher around the rim.
Reid was a force on the glass in North Scott’s win over Linn-Mar, pulling down 15 rebounds (4 offensive) to go with 12 points (4-10 FG, 2-7 3P, 2-2 FT). A long, bouncy wing who has really improved his athleticism over the last 18 months, he does a great job high-pointing the ball on both ends of the floor and is a good enough ball-handler and decision-maker to lead the break after pulling down a defensive rebound. He has a pure stroke from the arc and a quick release off the catch, which he pairs with good off-ball movement to get open looks from deep routinely.
A tough, physical guard who loves to play downhill and finish through contact, the future Iowa football player played with a swagger and toughness against Linn-Mar that really set the tone for the Lancers win. He bounces off defenders on his way to the rim and has the tremendous upper-body strength to finish through contact. He had 13 points on 4-8 shooting (1-3 3P, 4-7 FT) to go with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
An athletic, slashing guard who thrives when he’s playing downhill and using his handles and quick first step to blow by defenders and get to the rim, Readus was really good against Linn-Mar, scoring 14 points on 5-12 shooting (2-5 3P, 2-2 FT) to go with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block. He’s an explosive athlete who can elevate in transition and finish above the rim with authority, and he does a good job competing on the glass on both ends of the floor. However, what stood out the most was his effort on the defensive end. He played with a non-stop motor, moving his feet and using his quickness to make things uncomfortable for the Lions ball handlers.
Phillips has had a bit of an up-and-down year for the Lancers, but he played really well in their substate semifinal win over Linn-Mar, scoring 16 points on 7-12 shooting (0-1 3P, 2-5 FT), 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. A long, athletic point-forward who handles it and sees the floor at a high level, he can create plays off the bounce for his teammates and has the size to see over the defense. He can defend multiple positions, competes on the glass on both ends of the floor, and is a really good finisher around the rim.
A 6-1 off-ball guard with a quick release off the catch and great off-ball movement, Martin scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting (3-5 3P, 3-4 FT) to go with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in the Regals’ substate final win over Pella Christian. He has picturesque form on his jumper and gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly off the catch. Defensively he uses his length well, contesting shots and getting into passing lanes.
Drew Streb
Drew Streb
Streb feasted in the mid-range against Pella Christian, routinely knocking down jumpers from the free-throw line area, getting into the middle of the PC zone and creating out of that area. He had 16 points on 7-8 shooting (2-3 FT) with 8 rebounds and 2 assists. He’s going to be an offensive lineman at Wartburg, and looks every bit the part of a successful football player, but his touch was really good from about 15 feet and in, and he was great on the glass, using his physical frame to create space on his boxouts and his soft hands to snatch boards.
In his final high school game, Geetings delivered one of his best performances, scoring 24 points on 9-16 shooting (3-7 3P, 3-4 FT) along with 3 assists in the Eagles’ loss to Regina. A long 6-3 off-ball guard who moves really well without the ball in his hands, Geetings has a quick release off the catch and plenty of range. Throughout the year he also showed more confidence in his ball-handling and shot creation, putting the ball on the floor more and getting good looks for himself and his teammates. An athletic wing defender, he provides a lot of value as a two-way weapon.
