Expert Analysis
Jared Martinson | Prep Hoops Scout
Long known for his prowess as an offensive weapon, Martin made a huge statement as a defender in the postseason for the Falcons, shutting down a pair of prolific scorers in helping lead West Burlington to their first state tournament appearance. He’s a three-level scorer who can create off the dribble or knock down shots off the catch, but his improvement on the defensive end will make him a valued prospect that Division II, NAIA, and Division III programs should be looking at hard.

Martin had a below-average offensive game by his standards in the Falcons’ district final win over West Branch – 9 points on 4-8 shooting (0-3 3P), 1 rebound, and 5 assists. But he was fantastic on the defensive end of the floor against Bears star guard

, holding him to 9-21 shooting (1-10 3P). He had 3 steals against the Bears and did a great job getting up into Arnaman, making him work hard to get any look off, and very few, if any, were clean. He moves his feet well on that end of the floor, has quick hands, and knows how to position himself on that end of the floor.

A smart guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands, Martin averaged 17.0 points, 2.8 assists, and 3.0 steals a game on 45-35-74 shooting splits as a junior for the Falcons. He shoots it well off both the dribble and the catch and he gets his teammates involved at a high clip. Defensively he has a knack for jumping passing lanes and turning defense into quick and easy offense.

Martin can play both with and without the ball in his hands, showing a quick release and pure stroke off the catch as well as the ability to put the ball on the floor and create looks for his teammates. At the next level, he’ll need to continue to tighten up his handles as he’ll probably be looked at as more of a lead guard moving forward. He does a good job positioning himself and moving his feet defensively. He averaged 17.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 3.0 steals a game as a junior for the Falcons.

Martin is a skilled scorer and playmaker who showcased impressive court vision and passing instincts throughout the game that we caught, threading the needle on a few pretty passes for easy buckets for his teammates. He’s a knockdown shooter off the catch who moves well without the ball in his hands, and he has good body control and finishing ability around the rim through contact.
