State Tournament: Monday Game Recaps
In this article:
1A Quarterfinal: #1 North Linn 75, #8 Woodbine 59
Top-seeded North Linn got a good test from eighth seed on Monday morning, but eventually ran away, winning 75-59 to advance to the semifinals for the eighth straight season.
The high-powered Lynx jumped out of the gates quick, scoring the first six points of the game, and it started to look like it may be another North Linn runaway in the quarterfinals. But credit to a young Woodbine team, they settled in, found their footing, and gave the Lynx a battle throughout. North Linn took a 33-25 lead into the break. Woodbine scored 10 of the first 13 points of the third quarter to draw to within a point, 36-35, but then North Linn did what North Linn does – they went on a game-changing run sparked by increased defensive intensity. A 15-5 spurt gave the Lynx a 51-40 lead and the Tigers never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
North Linn improves to 24-1 with the win, and will await the winner of the Winfield-Mt. Union/Lynnville-Sully game. The Lynx were led by junior guard Mason Bechen Mason Bechen 6'1" | PG North Linn | 2025 State IA , who had a game-high 25 points to go with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Ty Pflughaupt Ty Pflughaupt 6'4" | SF North Linn | 2024 State IA added 15 points and 3 steals, and Jake Van Etten had 11 points and 7 rebounds and was particularly good in the first half.
Woodbine’s season ends with a 23-3 record and the Tigers’ first state tournament appearance since 1996. All five starters will return and the Tigers will absolutely be considered one of the team’s to beat in Class 1A next season. They were led by freshman wing Landon Blum Landon Blum 6'5" | SG Woodbine | 2027 State IA , who had an outstanding state tournament debut, scoring 23 points on 8-15 shooting (7-11 3P). Bechen took over in the second half, turning a tight game into a comfortable Lynx win. A tough 6-2 guard who can score from all three levels, defend at a high level, and create plays off the dribble for himself and his teammates, he was in complete control throughout the quarterfinal win, helping the Lynx advance to the semifinals for the eighth straight season.
1A Quarterfinal: #4 Winfield-Mt. Union 54, #5 Lynnville-Sully 37
For the first time since 1996, Winfield-Mt. Union is into the Class 1A semifinals following a 54-37 win over fifth-seeded Lynnville-Sully on Monday afternoon.
Winfield-Mt. Union led throughout, taking a 3-0 lead 1:23 into the game and holding that lead for the rest of the contest. They held Lynnville-Sully to just two points in the first quarter, and throughout the afternoon their defense, which ranks 1st in the class in points allowed, was suffocating. They held the Hawks to just 29.8% shooting, including 14.3% from 3-point range.
Lynnville-Sully got to within 26-25 midway through the third quarter, but the Wolves responded with a 23-3 run over the next 9:12 to turn a hotly contested game into a blowout.

The future Iowa football player battled some foul trouble throughout the game, but was absolutely dominant when he was on the floor on both ends. The Lynnville-Sully offense really struggled to get anything going offensively when he was on the court, and he was a force offensively, scoring a game-high 21 points and showing some confidence in his jumper. A physical force with eye-popping athleticism, he was clearly the best player on the floor in this one.
1A Quarterfinal: #2 Marquette Catholic 45, #7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck 36
Marquette Catholic, the second-seeded team in the 1A tournament, by their own admission, didn’t play well for the first 28 minutes of their quarterfinal against Gladbrook-Reinbeck. But they hung around, hung around, and hung around until finding a spark and grabbing control over the last four minutes, advancing to the 1A semifinals with a 45-36 win.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck, a tough, defensive-minded team, frustrated the Defenders throughout the game, holding Marquette well below their season average of 74.8 points a game. The Rebels packed it in tight and dared the Defenders to beat them with jumpers, and that part of the game plan worked, as Marquette was just 1-12 from the arc in the game. But on the other end of the floor, the Rebels weren’t able to put together enough offense to grab control of the game, allowing Marquette to stick around.
After falling behind 30-23 with 3:36 left in the third quarter, Marquette closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to tie it at 30 heading into the final stanza. The teams exchanged buckets, and then the Defenders got their spark in the form of Caden Kettmann Caden Kettmann 6'4" | SG Marquette Catholic Bellevue | 2024 State IA . In an 11-second span, Kettmann buried a 15-footer, then got a steal and found Eli Scott cutting for a layup. In 11 seconds, Marquette Catholic grabbed their biggest lead of the game, and it was a lead they didn’t give up the rest of the way. That’s how quickly things can change in state tournament basketball.
Marquette Catholic improves to 26-1 with the win and will await either Lake Mills or North Union in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Defenders were led by Eli Scott, who had a game-high 14 points, including 10-12 from the free-throw line. Isaac Brinker added 9 big points, and Jacob Litterer had 7.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s season ends with a 21-6 record and a second straight state tournament appearance. The Rebels will bring back four starters from this group and will be a factor in the class again next season. They were led by Isaac Clark, the lone senior starter, who had 11 points in his final game. 1A Quarterfinal: #3 Lake Mills 58, #6 North Union 50
You knew it wouldn’t be easy in the third meeting between these Top of Iowa Conference rivals. Third-seeded Lake Mills built a 15-point lead and looked like they may cruise into the 1A semifinals, nearly blew that lead, and then escaped with a 58-50 win over sixth-seeded North Union, advancing to face Marquette Catholic on Wednesday night.
These teams played a pair of tight games during the regular season, a 4-point North Union win and a 2-point Lake Mills victory. But early in this one it looked like Lake Mills wanted to do away with any drama, jumping out to a quick 14-2 lead before the Warriors, making the first state tournament appearance in school history, knew what hit them. Credit to North Union, though, they found their footing and battled back to within 22-20 before another flurry from Lake Mills sent the Bulldogs into the locker rooms with a 34-25 lead.
Lake Mills held a double-digit lead for a majority of the third quarter, and that advantage ballooned up to 15 early in the fourth quarter before North Union came storming back with a 14-0 run, making it 49-48 Lake Mills with 2:25 to play. The Warriors threw some fullcourt pressure on the Bulldogs during that run, and the ‘Dogs didn’t handle it particularly well early on, letting the Warriors grab some momentum. Grady Madden had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws, but split them for that 49-48 score, and Aiden Stensrud Aiden Stensrud 6'6" | PF Lake Mills | 2025 State IA grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds on the ensuing possession before finally getting a bucket to fall and give the Bulldogs a 51-48 lead, shutting the door on the Warriors comeback effort, and ultimately on their magical season.

A 6-5 forward who showed some ability to create off the dribble from the high post area, Stensrud had a nice showing on both ends of the floor.
2A Quarterfinal: #1 Western Christian 56, #8 Regina 34
Western Christian is arguably the best program in the state, regardless of class. The Wolfpack have won a state record 10 championships, and they got one step closer to adding another trophy to the case with a methodical dismantling of eighth-seeded Regina, 56-34, on Monday night.
Regina had the upset recipe working early on, grinding the game to a halt, eating up a lot of the shot clock on each possession, but they couldn’t get the shots to fall. The Regals held a 6-4 lead with 2:18 left in the first quarter, but an 11-0 Western Christian run gave control of the game to the Wolfpack, and they didn’t look back from there. The Wolfpack took a 12-point lead with 3:44 left in the first half and never led by less than double digits the rest of the way.
Western Christian improves to 21-3 with the win. A high IQ 5-11 guard who wants the ball in his hands in big moments, Lovely was sensational from the opening tip in helping lead the Cardinals into the semifinals. He’s a shifty guard with great handles, supreme confidence, and fantastic court vision. He put on a show on both ends of the floor in the win, playing good on-ball defense, creates for his teammates, and knocking down some huge shots to either stop or grab momentum.
