Expert Analysis
Tony Roe | Prep Hoops Scout
An athletic, slashing guard who thrives when he’s playing downhill and using his handles and quick first step to blow by defenders and get to the rim, Readus was really good against Linn-Mar, scoring 14 points on 5-12 shooting (2-5 3P, 2-2 FT) to go with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block. He’s an explosive athlete who can elevate in transition and finish above the rim with authority, and he does a good job competing on the glass on both ends of the floor. However, what stood out the most was his effort on the defensive end. He played with a non-stop motor, moving his feet and using his quickness to make things uncomfortable for the Lions ball handlers.

Readus was a man possessed in the Lancers’ win over Assumption last Tuesday night, finishing with 18 points on 7-16 shooting (1-5 3P) to go with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. A highly skilled scorer who can get to the rim seemingly at will, he pairs his excellent handles with an explosive first step to get to the bucket, and he’s a good, creative finisher around the rim. His jumper wasn’t falling consistently, so he quit settling for 3s and mid-range shots, choosing to get to the bucket instead. His ability to break down the defense and get them to collapse was also valuable in their attack, as he displayed good court vision and passing, finding open teammates on the wings for good looks. This was the best I’ve seen Readus play.

Readus is a score-first guard with a strong mid-range game and good handles that he uses to get to the rim for finishes. He’s capable of dropping 15 points in a quarter and is the type of confident scorer that can take over games in the blink of an eye. He needs to continue to improve as a perimeter shooting threat (28.4 3P% last season), which will only make him a more deadly offensive weapon. He averaged 18.9 points and 2.6 assists a game at Davenport Central last season and has transferred to North Scott for his senior year.

A dynamic scoring threat who can fill it up from all three levels in a hurry, Readus had some explosive scoring games for the Barnstormers this summer. He can create looks for himself and is a confident playmaker who wants the ball in his hands late in games. He’s a good enough shooting threat that it needs to be respected, but he’s at his best when he’s playing downhill and using his quickness and athleticism to get to the rim for finishes. He’s a good athlete who will compete on the defensive end and contribute on the glass.

was spectacular in the win for the Iowa Barnstormers. He made a couple threes, had nice drives to the rim, and was able to finish through contact. Defensively, Readus was a beast, as he forced several steals and extended his ball pressure the full length of the court. He provided the spark his team needed to get the win.

Readus is a shifty guard with good size at 6-2/6-3, and he uses his length effectively on the defensive end, getting into passing lanes and turning defense into quick offense. In the halfcourt, he’s a skilled ball-handler and shot creator who knows how to get to his spots using his quick first step and solid frame, and he has a pure stroke from the high school line and in. He needs to work on becoming a more consistent jump shooter, but that should come with repetition – nothing with the form looks like a problem.
