Continue ReadingReadus was a man possessed in the Lancers’ win over Assumption last Tuesday night, finishing with 18 points on 7-16 shooting (1-5 3P) to go with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. A highly skilled scorer who can get to the rim seemingly at will, he pairs his excellent handles with an explosive first step to get to the bucket, and he’s a good, creative finisher around the rim. His jumper wasn’t falling consistently, so he quit settling for 3s and mid-range shots, choosing to get to the bucket instead. His ability to break down the defense and get them to collapse was also valuable in their attack, as he displayed good court vision and passing, finding open teammates on the wings for good looks. This was the best I’ve seen Readus play.
Gerardy will walk-on to the Iowa football team, and he’ll give the Hawkeyes a lot of toughness. On the hardwood, he’s a tough, physical guard who impacts the game in a number of ways, contributing 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal in North Scott’s win over Assumption. He finishes well around the rim, is an active, physical, and quick defender, and he isn’t afraid to stick his nose in on the glass against bigger bodies. He’s a leader on the floor who plays hard on every possession.
A long, lanky wing who can really shoot it, Reid has done a nice job in the last year turning himself from primarily a catch-and-shoot wing into a really valuable all-around player who contributes across the board. He had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block against Assumption, showing his two-way ability. He’s a long, switchable defender who moves well and covers a lot of ground, and on the offensive end he has a lightning-quick release off the catch and plenty of range. He showed more of a willingness to pound the glass, and he has developed as a ball-handler and playmaker to the point where he can lead the break after pulling down a defensive rebound.
Another long, versatile two-way threat for the Lancers, Phillips had 13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a block against Assumption. He continues to improve as a shooting threat, going 2-4 from behind the arc and showing a release that has sped up a bit, and he uses the increased threat of his jumper to open up his dribble penetration. At 6-6/6-7, he covers a lot of ground in a small amount of time and is able to get to the rim when he wants, but he’s also a willing passer who sees the floor well. He provides a lot of versatility on the defensive end, rotating well and showing that he can defend on the perimeter when switched onto smaller ball handlers.
Frazell was excellent in W-SR’s loss against Clear Lake, scoring a game-high 25 points on 9-14 shooting (5-9 3P). He has an extremely quick trigger on his jumper, especially when he’s shooting it off the catch, and he moves well without the ball in his hands, finding open spaces in the defense to get his jumper off. He did a nice job attacking aggressive closeouts as well, getting to the rim for finishes on a few occasions off the bounce.
Highlights
Marsh is an impressive athlete who will also walk-on to play football at Iowa. He provided the highlight of the game in the fourth quarter, making a backdoor cut from the left corner, catching just outside the lane and taking off to throw down a thunderous dunk in the middle of the lane. He’s a big, physical, and athletic wing who can get to his spots, knock down shots off the dribble or the catch, and contribute on the glass and defensively with his athleticism. He had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks against Clear Lake.

Ciesielski was great for the Wildcats in their win over MOC-Floyd Valley, stuffing the stat sheet to the tune of 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals. He’s a talented lead guard with a great feel for the game who doesn’t look to force anything, taking his shots when they’re open, otherwise content to get his teammates involved. He’s a quick guard who moves his feet extremely well on that end of the floor, and he does a great job getting up into passing lanes and making it difficult for opposing teams to get the ball to his man.
