The Great Lakes Closer: Wings, Bigs That Made Me Stop and Watch

Everybody loves the point guards.   The handles. The step-backs. The logo threes that end up all over social media.   But if you've spent enough time in gyms, you know basketball games are often decided by wings making timely shots, forwards doing the dirty work, and bigs controlling the paint without demanding the spotlight.   The Great Lakes Closer at Hype Athletics had plenty of those players.   These were the guys rebounding everything in sight, spacing the floor, defending multiple positions, embracing contact, and making winning plays that don't always make the highlight reels.   Here are the Top 5 wings and bigs that jumped off the page on Day 1.    If you're going to help off Evan Bekius, good night.   At 6-foot-4, Bekius is one of the better shooters I saw all day and shoots the ball with the confidence of someone who expects every shot to drop. But the jumper is only part of the package. He attacks hard closeouts, makes smart reads when defenses collapse, and moves exceptionally well without the basketball to create opportunities for himself. The Michigan Ignition wing plays within the flow of the offense, yet still finds ways to impact games as a scorer. And yes, if he's cooking, there's a good chance you'll hear about it too. The confidence and swagger are real.     Some players hunt numbers.   Brayden Cook hunts winning possessions.   At 6-foot-6, Cook impacts the game in a variety of ways without forcing the action. He can score from the perimeter, operate in the mid-post, and finish around the basket when opportunities present themselves. His shooting stretches defenses, but what stood out most was his basketball IQ. He cuts with purpose, sets solid screens, makes timely passes, and understands spacing better than many players his age. Cook simply understands how to play team basketball, and coaches tend to love players who make the game easier for everyone around them.     If hustle had a mascot, Miam Moore might be the first nominee.   The 6-foot-3 lefty played every possession like somebody told him the game was ending in five minutes. His motor jumps off the floor immediately as he attacks the glass on both ends and creates extra possessions through effort and toughness alone. Moore rebounds well above his size because he understands positioning, leverage, and timing. Offensively, there's still room to expand the overall skill set, particularly with the jumper and free throws, but his willingness to embrace physicality and do the dirty work already makes him incredibly valuable.     Some bigs avoid contact.   Evan Tyler invites it.   At 6-foot-6, the NOVA Elite big man plays with an old-school mentality that coaches appreciate. He establishes deep position early, seals defenders effectively, and uses strong footwork around the basket to generate quality looks in the paint. Tyler shows soft hands, finishes through contact, and displays touch around the rim that immediately stands out. One underrated part of his game is his ability to convert free throws, which prevents defenders from simply sending him to the line. Defensively, he holds his own and provides a steady interior presence on the other end.     Johnathan Crow's scouting report starts with one word:   Shooter.   The Michigan Ignition wing knocked down six triples during one game and forced defenses to completely alter how they guarded him the rest of the day. If Crow catches the ball with space, he's letting it fly without hesitation or second thoughts. But he isn't simply standing in the corner waiting for opportunities. He moves well without the basketball, understands how to relocate into open windows, and has enough off-the-dribble ability to attack aggressive closeouts. His shooting gravity alone changes defensive coverages and opens opportunities for everyone else on the floor.    The common thread among every player on this list wasn't flashy highlights or eye-popping stat lines.   It was impact.   Extra rebounds. Smart cuts. Floor spacing. Toughness. Defensive versatility. Basketball IQ.   Those are the things coaches notice, teammates appreciate, and scouts remember long after the final buzzer sounds.
