Continue ReadingRoughly ten to thirteen games are in the books throughout Wisconsin prep basketball. We have seen a handful of the young prospects around the state make an impact on their respective varsity clubs. In my opinion, there are four that are making a statement with their play, two more that have been nothing short of impressive, and then three that we all need to keep watching in order to see what type of play they with put up as the year goes on. All nine have made that impact and are being productive. All nine should all be on our own personal watch lists of the state’s prospects.
Jalen Brown Jalen Brown 6'5" | SF Wauwatosa West | 2027 State WI | 6’4″ | PG | 2027 | Wauwatosa West | Team Herro EYBL
Jalen is making a statement for the top one, two, or three, of the top players for the class. He has started all 13 games for the 8-5 Wauwatosa West Trojans. Has played a very solid brand of ball within the high-profile club featuring two players that have received D1 offers. He averages 15ppg 6 rebounds, 4.9 assists per contest. He scores mostly by driving hard to the hoop, allowing his big frame to impose its will on smaller guards. He is shooting a very good 40% from deep, which is tops on the team for those that shoot with any volume. The 6 rebounds that he averages is behind only the 6’10″Rogers and is tremendous out of a PG position. This of course can be attributed to his 6’4″ size and that of his defensive presence. The overwhelming amount of his glass play is on the defensive end of the court which he is turning into transition play. He is just a pinch off the school season record of 5 assist per game by averaging 4.9 per contest. With that said he has already notched the single game record of 15 early in the season.
Jack Kohnen Jack Kohnen 6'5" | SF Slinger | 2027 State WI | 6’5″ | W | 2027 | Slinger | Team Herro EYBL
This player is having himself a season in his first campaign for the 7-6 Slinger HS club. It looks as though he has started and played in 11 out of his team’s 13 competitions. Averaging a huge 19.4 ppg and then adding13 rebounds per game is making him a consistent double-double. Any way you cut this this is top production. Then he throws in 3.5 assist per contest, and you can see he has a well-rounded approach. to the game. He is slightly under performing with only shooting 31% from deep, but let’s not fault him too much in the category. It’s early, and with those other numbers being posted it is likely the shooting with come along soon enough.
Dooney Johnson Dooney Johnson 6'5" | SG Milwaukee Juneau | 2027 State WI | 6’4″ | W | Milwaukee Juneau | Team Herro EYBL
This player is posting some huge numbers and if you haven’t caught a game make sure you do at some point. Through ten games he is posting 25pts per game, 8.6 rebounds, 3.5 assist and shooting 44% on 61 attempts from deep. This is just absolutely incredible.
Donovan Davis | 6’6″ | W | Freedom | Team Herro EYBL
A prospect that has a big frame that might be continuing to grow. He has solid athleticism and at 6’6″ this prospect from Freedom HS imposes his will on you. So far at or near the mid-point of the season one cannot argue with his production of a double-double per contest at 16pts and 10 rebounds per game. Oh and by the way he throws in a very respectable 4.5 assist per game too.
Zamari Whitmore Zamari Whitmore 6'0" | PG St. Augustine Prep | 2027 WI | 5’10” | G | St. Augustine Prep | ABC Lions
Even though I have seen him play a few times, either this past summer and or fall, I have not caught a high school game yet this season. It looks as though he might be carrying his young ball club to a 7-4 mid-season record with a 25.5 point per game average. He even had an out-burst of 42 points in one of his games so far this season. When the rankings are produced, in time, he will most likely come in the top 20 to top 15 in the state.
Max Jones Max Jones SG State WI | 6’2″ | W | West Allis Central | 24:Up
When I first saw him at the Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase this past fall, he looked like the top athlete in the 2027 class. For the up-and-coming West Allis Central team, he appears to be doing alright for them having started 10 or 11 contest so far. He is putting up solid numbers at 16.8 ppg and 5.3 rebounds per game. Once he refines his game watch out.
