In this article I’ll break down five prospects who stood out to me at the event. Check out Shane Garcia’s work on this event breaking down the top seniors and top players as well!
A prospect I caught in the playoffs as a Sophomore, Morris has clearly taken a leap athletically and looks much more confident putting the ball on the deck. Last year Morris was a complimentary guard who could knock down an open shot and shoot it from the outside. He still has that smooth stroke by knocking down a couple spot-up triples, but the athletic jump he made stood out the most to me. More confident attacking downhill and almost catching a body on a backdoor cut, Morris looks like a potential breakout star who knows how to play in the Newark system.
Taylor caught fire on Saturday, knocking down numerus 3-pointers from the corner including a dagger with about a minute to play. Taylor looks like he’s grown an inch since I last watched him and has the length to be an impact defender at the next level. Scholarship programs should take a look at Taylor, who would be a steal for a Division III program if they were able to sign him.
Highlights
The freshman played poised on Friday night helping Pickerington Central get an impressive victory over Akron STVM. Hitting spot-up shots that came to him, Evans didn’t look out of place physically on the court and was confident whenever he made a move to the basket. Also making some toughness plays like an offensive rebound putback and getting active after loose balls, Evans appears to be one of the top guards in Ohio’s 2027 class.
Losing a lot of talent from their state championship squad, Buchtel has a lot of new faces in bigger roles this season. Their scrappiness hasn’t been lost as the Grifs used a scrappy defensive effort to claw back and force overtime against a tough Pickerington North squad. Taylor had some big rebounds and scored a couple second chance buckets. His size helped Buchtel control the glass against a Pickerington North squad that excels at turning you over. We’ll see if Buchtel can continue their dominance in the Akron City League with this new look team.
Reynoldsburg is one of the most talented teams in Ohio with four players holding Division I offers. However it was a football first prospect in Griffin who made arguably the biggest impact on Saturday night in their win over Richmond Heights. Griffin ran the show as the point guard, getting downhill and setting the table for their wings and forwards. A clutch pull-up shooter, Griffin can get hot in a hurry from the outside with the 3-point shot. Also throwing down a transition dunk that got the crowd off their feet, you saw the explosiveness that makes Griffin a force on the gridiron. Late in the game it was an assist from Griffin that helped Reynoldsburg take the lead late when he hit Jordan Bowens on the pick and roll. Impressive team win from Reynoldsburg who had a few individual standouts, but I picked Griffin to spotlight.
