For the first time in Oregon, the Freshman Showcase took place and many of the best players from the Class of 2027 came from all over the state to compete against one another. These incoming high school players got a great chance to see what they could do, especially offensively and plenty of points were scored. While that was great to see, we looked beyond just the raw point totals to see if there were some players that impacted and changed the game through their play in not only scoring but also other areas.
A number of these guys earned All-Event nominations. While others may not have made those teams, these young men certainly qualify as #PHFreshmanShowcase GameChangers.
Braylon Gaines Braylon Gaines 5'9" | PG Nelson | 2027 State OR (2027 Nelson)

Gaines was our overall MVP of the event as he dominated the action from the point guard spot. He was very difficult to contain off the dribble, finished around the hoop, and made plays for others as well as himself. There is no question the future is bright for him at Nelson and could be the starting point guard there from day one.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Court Leadership. Gaines played as a pure point guard on many occasions, looking solely to run the offense and set up teammates utilizing his great court vision, passing skills, and vocal leadership. We didn’t keep detailed statistics but he had to have averaged at least five assists a game during the event.
Jaydon Schregardus Jaydon Schregardus 5'11" | CG Nelson | 2027 State OR (2027 Nelson)

The top scorer at the event may have well be Schregardus, who was a walking bucket the second he walked on the floor. He scored points in bunches, both within the halfcourt set or in transition, and was super sharp with his shooting stroke from beyond three-point range. He’ll be paired with Gaines at Nelson in what will be a hard backcourt to contend with for the next four years.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Range. There was no way to play off of Schregardus as he would make you pay from beyond the arc. He had to be watched at all times because he not only drilled shots off the catch-and-shoot but created off the dribble as well. The game certainly changed when he really started getting cooking from the outside.
Alarion Scott Alarion Scott 6'4" | PF West Linn | 2027 State OR (2027 West Linn)

Arguably the best big man in attendance, Scott wasn’t a traditional big man even though the majority of his points came inside the paint. He was capable of facing the hoop, creating off the dribble, and even knocked down a couple of perimeter jumpers. Where Scott really excelled was running the floor in transition and he finished off a number of possessions above the rim.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Rebounding. Scott was the top rebounder we saw at the event and he utilized not only utilized his natural length and athleticism to grab boards, but worked hard at it as well on both ends. His crashing of the offensive glass led to many second and third opportunities for his team and is was near impossible to contain him.
Darius Andrews Darius Andrews 6'3" | PG Centennial | 2027 State OR (2027 Centennial)

The player that may have generated the most buzz in the gym on Sunday was Andrews, as we heard his name mentioned by multiple observers in attendance. The lefty was flat out unstoppable getting to the basket and he scored both through and around defenders. Andrews dominated play without being selfish either, a notable quality for a future star player.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Motor. There were very few guys that played as hard as Andrews did, especially on the defensive end – and it’s not common for guys that score a lot of points to also do it on D. The incoming Centennial freshman never let up with his energy level in every game and took on every defensive assignment as a personal challenge.
Rogen Brown Rogen Brown 6'2" | CG Mountainside | 2027 State OR (2027 Mountainside)

While he typically wasn’t the biggest stat guy in any of the games we watched, there was no question Brown made an impact on the basketball floor. He simply did whatever was needed to be done on the basketball floor, whether it was knocking down shots, making the extra pass, or helping out on defense.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Versatility. Brown had the ability to defend multiple positions and was capable of playing at different spots on the offensive end as well. In short, we didn’t see any glaring weakness in his game, which was about as all-around as you can ask for in an incoming freshman.
Trey Price Trey Price 6'1" | PG West Linn | 2027 State OR (2027 West Linn)

Price was a shot maker in the games we saw, showing off a nice shot from both the mid-range and from beyond the three. He took what the defense gave him and was just as capable of putting the ball on the floor as he was spotting up for open shots.
What Made Him a GameChanger: Big Shots. It seemed to us that Price had that something special not all shooters/scorers possess – the clutch gene. His layup at the end of one game was the game-winning bucket in that same contest, whenever the opponent got close he was big time with big shots.
