Expert Analysis
Ryan Svenson | Prep Hoops Scout
The top ranked player in the 2027 class is healthy after an injury plagued junior season that saw him miss over half of the year including the playoff game at Clackamas. Gaines is a guy that just knows how to get it done, whether that is scoring the ball or finding opportunities for his teammates. He’s a guy that will eventually find a solid D1 program to call home.

Moving into the top spot in this update is Gaines, who followed up a sensational sophomore campaign where he led 6A in scoring with a solid run on the EYBL with NW Rotary Rebels. He also performed well in elite camps during the fall and that led him to earning his first two scholarship offers from Western Oregon and Portland State and there’s plenty of interest from other schools. He’s a candidate for not only Mt Hood Conference but state POY honors. (JT)

Gaines is typically going to be one of the hardest-working players on any court, and this afternoon was no different. He’s always looking to push the ball up the court, attack gaps, draw contact, and is a creative and tough player, which drives his ability to make plays. One play that stood out, representing his toughness in a nutshell, was when 6-foot-8

plowed through Gaines going up for an offensive board. Gaines toppled over, but got up, recognized his team about to pull down a board, and booked it to the other end to beat everyone for an easy two. He’s also an instinctual defender who can anticipate passes outside of the play, slip off his man like a DB, and intercept passes.

from Nelson continues to shine over the summer, as he had an impressive performance in the Mike James Top 60 Boys Camp. Braylon stands out amongst his peers because he is one of the hardest-working players in the gym. He isn’t afraid to make contact with his opponents. His moves to attack the rim are like poetry in motion. He can easily drive hard and then float in the air with some impressive hang time. It’s his ability to change direction so smoothly that he leaves opponents scrambling to catch him. Braylon is extremely good at getting to the free-throw line.
Braylon is a sharp shooter and quick on defense. He’s a great communicator and leader out on the court. It is his leadership that helps his teammates know where to be at the right time during games. Be on the lookout for this Nelson rising star. He is the complete program package. There’s no doubt he is going to continue to shine this season in basketball.
