Continue ReadingThe 2023 U.S. Open AAU Championships and College Basketball Academy tip off on Monday in Memphis. Here’s a look at four things we’ll be watching during the final “live” period of the summer.
1. Jack Daugherty Jack Daugherty 6'8" | PF Brookfield Central | 2024 State #311 Nation WI Chasing High Majors
This will be a good opportunity for Daugherty to leave one last impression on high major coaches. Ascending to one of the top mid-major prospects in the Midwest, the sweet shooting 6-foot-8 forward has been trending up every single year. A constant improver who adds to his game every chance he gets, Daugherty’s range paired with a budding perimeter skillset and fall away game in the post makes him a dangerous scorer at the next level.
2. Can Nolan Minessale Nolan Minessale 6'5" | SF Marquette | 2024 State WI Crack the Top 10?
One of the top rising prospects during the travel season, Minessale has picked up three Division 1 scholarship offers from St. Thomas, Green Bay, and South Dakota State. The high-rising, plus-length wing will get a chance to stand on his own in Memphis. Eager to see what Minessale does away from AAU club, Chapman Basketball Academy , who has a very well-run system with players the Marquette standout is very accustomed to playing with. Given his measurables, ability to impact the game in a variety of ways, and improving 3-point shot, think Minessale could jump into the top 10 of our rankings with a strong week.
3. Two Promising Forwards Take the Floor
We’ll also get a good look at 2025 forward Luka Momcilovic Luka Momcilovic 6'8" | SF Pewaukee | 2025 State WI (Pewaukee) and 2024 power forward Jonathan O’neill (Kaukauna) in Memphis.
A top 25 rising junior, Momcilovic is expected to make a nice jump for the Pirates next season as they defend a run of three-straight titles. The versatile, 6-foot-7 forward, Momcilovic has some of the same tools as his older brother, who’s now at Iowa State.
One of the top rim protectors in Wisconsin, O’neill is a very high-upside prospect with a big motor. He’s a walking double-double at times with his ability to clean up the offensive glass and generate second chance baskets. A lanky, athletic, and explosive 6-foot-9 big man, O’neill is still just scratching the surface.
4. Club Teams Compete For the Title
There will be even more Wisconsin prospects partaking in the U.S. Open AAU championships, including two teams from the Badger State.
Headlined by Devin Brown Devin Brown 6'7" | PF Milwaukee Academy Of Science | 2025 State #196 Nation WI (Milwaukee Academy of Science), Juan Guerrero Hernandez Juan Guerrero Hernandez 6'3" | CG Grafton | 2025 State #189 Nation WI (Grafton), and Jamarion Batemon Jamarion Batemon 6'3" | CG Milwaukee Academy of Science | 2025 State #174 Nation WI (Milwaukee Academy of Science), Power 5 was one of the top 16U teams on the 3SSB Circuit.
Wisconsin Playground Club from the Under Armour Association will also be represented. A loaded group featuring Amari Allen (Kaukauna), Kai Rogers Kai Rogers 6'10" | C Wauwatosa West | 2025 State #41 Nation WI (Wauwatosa West), T.J. Stuttley (Onalaska), Jake Hansen Jake Hansen 6'1" | SG Wauwatosa West | 2025 State #331 Nation WI (Wauwatosa West), Chris Davis Jr. (Sun Prairie West), and Will Garlock Will Garlock 6'11" | C Middleton | 2025 State #204 Nation WI (Middleton) will be on display.
Also competing in 16U, Mac Irvin Fire, which features Trevor Polite Trevor Polite 6'6" | SF Homestead | 2025 State WI (Homestead) and Davion Hannah (formerly Nicolet), was one of the 24 teams selected.
All three squads have faced one another since the spring and developed a bit of a rivalry.
