Willie has looked really good this fall. Looks a little taller, a little longer, and definitely a bit stronger. Seems to have more burst off the dribble and he is a player – one hand floater or pull-up jumper – that scores really well on the move. Also knocked out some feet set triples. A player that I could see taking a big step forward this season.

The score that will stick with me was Wright putting a shake on Johnson to the right and then quickly stepping left to hit a pull-up three with nice lift. The shot was released before the defender could get back to balance to defend. Such a sudden separation move into the lift for the jumper. That was followed with an attack middle in transition to finish beating a man one on one in the middle of the floor and then a pull-up three for Wright’s seven first half field goal make.

Was there an 8th first half score? There was! After a big got stuck on Willie off the ball screen, he stepped back off the attack and hit a third first half triple.

The jab step right into a quick dribble left seemed to fool Anoka all game. Wright’s fourth three was also from this move. Finished the contest with 11 field goals.

Minnetonka has a ton of young talent this year, with Willie stepping into the role of one of his team’s leaders now as a junior. I watched the Skippers take on Anoka, where Willie showcased a lethal pull-up jumper as he led his team to a win. It didn’t matter if it was from three or from around the elbow, if his man dropped off Willie was going to elevate for a jumper. Off the dribble he does a great job of quickly squaring up and getting off his shot, leaving his defender no time to react and get a good contest. When Willie’s shot is falling like it was on Sunday, there’s not much you can do to stop him.

Willie Wright was a late addition to the team, and it’s easy to see why he could be one of the best guards in the Lake Conference this season. The Minnetonka junior made things look effortless at times as he consistently got to his spots for pull-up jumpers, showcasing a lethal mid-range game. Willie can stop on a dime and gets good elevation on his shot making it difficult for defenders to contest. When he first started high school he made his biggest impact defensively, and we saw more of his ability to be a pest on the ball, pressuring opposing guards hard throughout the game.

Willie Wright Jr Willie Wright Jr 6'1" | SG Minnetonka | 2028 State MN . is a six-foot-one-inch 2028 guard from Minnetonka. Wright is a good perimeter shooter, solid quickness as a ball handler and can play both with and without the ball.

As a freshman playing in the loaded Lake Conference last year, there were times where Willie looked a bit timid offensively. He could make an impact on the defensive end, but wasn’t always looking to score. That seems to have changed as he came out firing on Sunday against Farmington. Farmington was able to put length on him as they have a very big team, but Willie had no problem connecting on pull-up jumpers over the top. He had the quickness to get to his spots in the mid-range and could stop on a dime to elevate for a shot. Parents in the stands were left going “wow” as Willie drained a number of tough jumpers as he looked to keep his team in the game.

Willie is one of the toughest on-ball defenders in the class, and he put that defensive ability on display on Saturday. It didn’t matter what spot on the floor he was guarding, he was going to make every possession difficult for his matchup. There were times he defender players half a foot taller than him, and Willie did a great job of absorbing contact through his chest and standing his ground to force difficult shots around the rim. Out on the perimeter he’s a pest on the ball, with the lateral quickness and effort needed to constantly cut guys off and make them change direction.
