Expert Analysis
Duvalier Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Mondragon set the tone early with his presence on both ends of the floor, and that opened things up for HoopTherapy in their Day 1 blowout win. He got the team going with a timely shot and consistently made the right reads as a ball handler. What stood out most was how he kept the offense flowing, especially against zone, never letting the ball stick. He competes defensively, rotates well, and understands his role. Mondragon is a player who we see play during the summer, and it has us questioning what is happening during the season, as he appears to be a guard who you can put the ball in his hands, and he makes plays happen. He’s a steady guard who impacts winning, and I feel that HoopTherapy is going to have a big season with him making big plays.

Mondragon is a key piece for Fountain Fort Carson and the type of reliable ballhandler every team needs on the floor. His vision is impressive, consistently playing with his head up and reading the defense while waiting for teammates to come open before delivering crisp, timely passes. He brings calm and control to the offense, but don’t sleep on his scoring ability. Mondragon is dangerous from deep, and when he gets into a rhythm, he can quickly take over and become very hard to stop

Preston is a player who stands out with his high IQ and feel for the game. He stands out without forcing the action and looking ahead to what Fountain Fort-Carson has, which is what they will need from him. He’s a pass-first guard that can create for himself and others, can knock down the 3-ball and makes sure his teammates are happy. We saw him at times this summer, and he really popped at our showcase and he looks ready to make some plays this season. He thrives within the flow of the offense, and FFC will need his impact off the bench. He makes a rise in the rankings.

Mondragon’s high IQ was evident as he consistently made the extra pass and kept the offense flowing. He looked comfortable spacing the floor, knocking down threes in 3-on-3 action, and then blended seamlessly into 5-on-5 play. He looked to be a player who excelled when the offense was flowing and did the little things to make sure that it did. His ability to make smart reads with backdoor passes, stretch the defense with his shot, and unselfish play highlighted a polished guard who values winning plays. I like how he stood out without doing too much.

Mondragon has a prime opportunity to make a name for himself at The Expo. Coming off a strong summer with 7070, he’s shown the poise, ball handling, and decision making you want from a lead guard. His ability to break down defenders off the dribble consistently created scoring chances, turning possessions into a guessing game for defenses on who would get the easy bucket. While he’s more than capable of knocking down shots when called upon, the elevated competition and surrounding talent at the showcase could push his game to another level, allowing him to display even more versatility and impact

Mondragon might be small in stature, but his game is big-time. He’s a high-effort guard with a tight handle and a knack for hitting tough shots. No matter if he’s breaking traps or scoring in bunches off the bench, he brings energy and poise. He reads the floor well, keeps the offense flowing, and makes timely plays. He’s a sparkplug that can shoot it from anywhere on the floor that’s earned his spot in the rankings.
