Day 1 of #PHSpringKickoff always brings a mix of expectations, questions, and opportunities. For some prospects, it was a chance to respond and show they belong, and they did just that. Whether it was bouncing back, stepping into a bigger role, or showcasing what they got, this group delivered when it mattered and proved themselves on a big stage.

Baca wasn't a name I had circled coming into the event, but he made sure that changed on Day 1. His activity consistently popped, as he was moving without the ball, finding gaps, and generating clean looks as a shooter. He plays with intent and doesn't wait for the game to come to him. Defensively, he rotated well as a help-side presence, and his team needed him to make those plays as they often go overlooked. He earned my respect with his motor and ability to keep making winning play,s and he's a prospect I want to see more of. Solid Day 1.

Brandt was the guy people kept asking about mid-game, and for good reason. He has good positional size, he plays with poise, and he just continues to make winning plays on the floor. During the high school season, he was THE GUY with the ball in his hands, and you saw that pop at times on Day 1, but he also showed that he could make those same plays off the ball as well. He knocked down shots, stayed active off the ball, and communicated defensively while guarding multiple positions. He competes and embraces both ends, and that puts you in a good spot. He's a small school prospect who clearly belongs. Brandt earned attention with a strong two-way showing, and while it was something that I saw throughout the season, it was one of those wake-up calls for others. Get eyes on Brandt.

Walden may have been in a close loss, but his performance stood out in a major way. He looked in control the whole game, playing at his own pace while reading plays ahead of time. He was telling teammates when to cut, signaling for skip passes and smart reads, and his IQ stood out for me. He has a strong build and good size at the guard spot. What also stood out was how lethal he was with the ball in his hands. Walden hit timely shots and led his group. He's a 2028 with real upside who left me wanting another look, as I have some questions as to why he was not on radars a bit sooner. He was one of my favorite watches on Day 1.

Mondragon set the tone early with his presence on both ends of the floor, and that opened things up for HoopTherapy in their Day 1 blowout win. He got the team going with a timely shot and consistently made the right reads as a ball handler. What stood out most was how he kept the offense flowing, especially against zone, never letting the ball stick. He competes defensively, rotates well, and understands his role. Mondragon is a player who we see play during the summer, and it has us questioning what is happening during the season, as he appears to be a guard who you can put the ball in his hands, and he makes plays happen. He's a steady guard who impacts winning, and I feel that HoopTherapy is going to have a big season with him making big plays.

Johnson didn't light up the stat sheet, but his impact was easy to see if you watched the game closely. He's a high-IQ player who understands spacing, cuts with purpose, and keeps the offense moving, even when he does not get the ball. He runs the floor, plays within the system, and competes defensively, and that's all you can ask for. He seems to understand that his shooting creates gravity and opens things up for others, and that can be a real pull for his teammates. He's one of those players who helps teams function at a high level, and that was on display as they went against the top team in the state on Day 1, with him making big plays in the game.

Thomas is an under-the-radar prospect who grabbed my attention with his motor and physical presence. He runs the floor hard, he crashes the glass, and finishes through contact. He was also constantly finding ways to generate easy looks with his activity. He had probably the highlight of the day, coming on a powerful putback dunk that energized the gym. Thomas did his work early as he sets solid screens, rolls with purpose, and uses his strength well. He's a very intriguing, under-the-radar forward that I want to see more from as he popped on Day 1.

Russell was a player for Prolific Elite who stood out with his ability to handle pressure and control tempo in a fast-paced back-and-forth affair. He made timely plays, kept his team in it, and showed a strong feel for the game. Even when he was not scoring, he created offense through facilitating and knowing what the defense was giving him. He pushes pace, makes the right pass, and competes defensively. He's a plug-and-play guard who leads and produces on both ends, and that was on display in their Day 1 victory.
