Another lead guard who has some D2 and NAIA offers, Harris is one of the best guards who never gets mentioned when talking about the best in this class. Mikey is a good facilitator who can create open looks for teammates just as well as he does for himself. If he has a good couple of weeks this month, Harris could move on to the radar for D1 schools.
The last game of the night featured LaRue County and Harris made it worth staying late in the gym on Saturday. Harris had a breakaway dunk that showed off his explosiveness off two feet and was making some slick passes with his left hand as well. A combo guard who can play on or off the ball, Harris has a repeatable shooting stroke from the outside but can also really pass the ball. Just like Roberts at Fairdale, I’d be giving Harris a hard look if I was a regional low major program while also having him at the top of my recruiting board for Division II and NAIA programs from across the region.
Harris is taking advantage of a big increase in his role this season and moves from 45th to 20th overall in this rankings update. Most of the Hawks offense is running through Michael this year and he’s showing he can carry the load. Averaging over 21 points per game and creating lots of good looks for his teammates, Harris’ numbers could go up even more once he gets back to shooting 38%+ from 3 this season.
The last game of the night saw Harris catch fire from long range as his ability to create shots for himself off the dribble was unbelievable to watch. Harris plays at his own pace and has plenty of juice on the ball by changing speeds and making quick dribble moves to create space. Looking extremely comfortable against big city talent, Harris wasn’t ever rushed or flustered on the ball and got to his spots to finish the game shooting 60% from the field and 50% from 3-point range on the night. Expect to see a sharp uptick in Harris’ recruitment starting this summer when more college programs see him in person.
LaRue was hit especially hard this spring by both graduation and the transfer portal but the cupboard is not bare. Mikey is a really good shooter who can score the ball well from all areas of the court and is evolving as a playmaker and defender. It’s easy to overlook LaRue because of what they lost but with Harris on board, don’t sleep on them as a contender in the wide open 5th region.
LaRue has lost a bunch of talent to graduation and transfer in the last 4 months but Harris is primed for a breakout season for the Hawks. There are several rising Juniors that will form the core of the LaRue County roster this season and Mikey is the best of the bunch. A good shooter who continues to improve his all around game, Harris is going to have the ball in his hands a lot this season and could be the most likely breakout candidate in the 5th region this year.
Harris had a big season and moved up from146 to 60th overall. Mikey has a good basketball IQ and feel for the game. He knows how to pick his spots on offense and doesn’t force a ton of shots. He’s got to improve his overall shooting numbers to reach the level he’s striving for but it looks like he has the work ethic to make an impact.
LaRue has ideas of winning the region and getting to Rupp Arena in March. For that to happen, Harris needs to turn his potential into production. He’s shown through AAU that he can be a really solid guard and he’s capable of scoring the ball at every level. With Daniel Allen now at Thomas More, Harris needs to be primed for a big role as a Sophomore.
