Smiley got going in the second quarter after his team took the first punch in the opening frame. He nailed a couple of midrange shots then started going downhill with some athletic finishes at the rim. He was really effective with one or two dribbles into a quick pullup but what really stood out was his focus late in the game. He made not one, not two, but three big shots in the fourth quarter, taking the lead back with each bucket. First it was an acrobatic layup to take the lead with four minutes left, then he buried a corner 3 with 1:31 left to take the lead again, then he sunk another tough layup with under a minute to go to reclaim the lead yet again. After all that, Garfield still found themselves trailing with just over a second remaining and needing to go the length of the floor. Smiley caught at half court and made an incredible attempt at a shot leaning away from the hoop that nearly went in.

He started the game against Mt Si a little slow. Missed some shots that he’s probably used to seeing go in, but he didn’t waiver at all, continued to trust his game and eventually started sinking shots. He’s a very calm player who can hit the tough, contested shots, and is usually pretty efficient with his movement off the ball, getting to his spots. At the end of the first half Mt Si’s Trevor Hennig Trevor Hennig 6'4" | SG Mt Si | 2024 State WA hit a tough shot as the clock ran down, Smiley immediately ran down to the opposite wing as the ball was inbounded, caught the pass and drilled the three at the buzzer. That’s just one example of his mindset and poise on the floor.

The talented guard out of Garfield remains solidified in the top spot, largely in part due to his steady, continued growth. From his freshman year as a lanky, contributing rotation player on a team with multiple current division one players, to his sophomore year when he helped his Bulldogs claim the 3A state title and was crowned tournament MVP, Smiley has upped his play and evolved his game at every turn.
Even now, as the 2023-24 season approaches, he’s shown another level to his development, playing with a cool confidence that comes from putting in the necessary work. Smiley’s recruitment continues to trend upwards as he’s currently the 114th ranked player in his class (247 Sports) and has reportedly been in contact with schools like LSU, Gonzaga, Alabama, Minnesota, and numerous PAC-12 schools. The junior guard has plenty of time left before he leaves for college, and you can only imagine what he’ll accomplish in his remaining high school years.
