Expert Analysis
Carey Smith | Prep Hoops Scout
Avery (2024-25 PCL All-Freshman selection) impressed on the spring grassroots circuit with his athleticism, speed and finishing skills. That trifecta made Avery unstoppable in the open court where he did not hesitate to finish with authority. Avery will catch opponents by surprise with his ability to grab a defensive, get downhill quickly and then push the rock himself on the break for scores or assists. His length and quick second jump enable Avery to dominate the glass at both ends of the court. His knack for crashing the offensive boards and the powering up through contact for a put back is impressive. Avery has also flashed a dependable three-points stroke. This spring, Avery received offers from Murray State and Cleveland State.

Avery is a well-built forward who has the promise to play on the perimeter eventually as he develops. He is active on the boards and uses length to alter shots. He has no problem running the floor. Avery also scores around the bucket frequently. His best basketball is ahead of him.

Coming off a productive year as one of the more impactful freshman in the Philly Catholic League, Avery is showing nice progress with his play thus far on the grassroots circuit. A natural mismatch at the forward spot, he looks increasingly comfortable out to the perimeter with the potential to transition more fully to the wing over time. Avery is comfortable as a catch-and-shoot threat from the arc with increasingly soft touch, setting up a balanced and methodical dribble-drive game once defenders run out at him. With a naturally bulky frame and football bloodlines, he brings an inherent toughness to the floor near the rim as well. Look for Avery to be squarely on D1 radars heading into his sophomore year.

A scoring forward who blends skill and physicality, Avery made an immediate splash in the Ryan lineup dating back to his debut last summer. He’s a mismatch problem facing the basket with his ability to put it on the deck past slower bigs and an increasingly reliable jumper out to the arc. He already shows a strong ability to both finish and rebound through contact. It’s obviously early, but Avery certainly looks the part of a future D1 prospect, with his ultimate level likely to be determined by how much he develops out on the wing moving forward.
