Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Making the transition from complementary piece to focal point look like a seamless one, Hughes bumped his scoring average over 20 per game as a senior while helping keep Ryan afloat in the league with a 7th seed and home opening round playoff game. Aside from the increase in raw production, Hughes looked far more confident and assertive in his attack, posing a consistent matchup problem for opposing frontcourts. He brings a blend of quickness, explosiveness, and skill that can be tough to contain when he’s consistently playing within himself. Hughes had some of the better individual games of anybody in the league this season and looks like a safe bet to help a scholarship-level program. A young senior, he also stands out as someone who could benefit from a post-grad year to continue stacking reps and add some muscle to his frame.

Hughes has been on an absolute tear to start the season, leading the PCL in scoring to this point, and while he quieted down relative to his torrid pace with “just” 19 points, continued to show noteworthy improvement that has him trending up as a prospect. He came out aggressive with 12 first half points, highlighted by an and-one poster slam in transition. The faceup forward was effective using both quickness and refined ball skills to work to spots off the bounce, finishing athletically in traffic and really impressing with a handful of slick passes in tight confines. He flashes his shooting potential but still has room to grow in terms of his consistency from the perimeter. Overall Hughes is clearly trending up and could be worth a look for D1 programs looking for an athletic and versatile developmental forward.

With a high degree of turnover in the lineup surrounding him, Hughes has come back looking as improved as any player in the league. He’s off to a torrid pace to start the year, averaging over 20 points a game highlighted by a school-record 43 in a win over Miller School (VA). Having previously tried to show himself as more of a wing, Hughes has thrived while committing himself to a mismatch ‘4’ role that makes use of his size, quickness, athleticism, and budding skill. He’ll have a chance to attract real D1 attention heading toward the spring but could really benefit from a year of prep school to continue building up his body and refining his game.

Hughes bounced around a bit as an underclassan, starting as a freshman at Cheltenham before essentially a redshirt year at Roman Catholic, but has found a home at Ryan and looks to be playing his best basketball at the right time. He showed flashes over the course of his junior year but really started putting things together this summer as an active, athletic, and versatile frontcourt piece. Comfortable operating both near the rim and on the perimeter on either end, he’s at his best when keeping things simple and using his physical tools and natural touch to make things happen facing the basket or crashing toward the rim. He’s entertained D1 recruitment over the past several months and will have schools from that level along with D2s and prep schools tracking him closely all winter.

At Philly HS Live, Hughes was a major physical presence at both ends of the floor. When you combine that physicality with his rim-to-rim speed and 3-point shooting, you get a high-level DI wing prospect. Hughes caught opponents by surprise with his long-distance shooting as he drained threes from all around arc and in transition. He also scored via dives to the rim or by working the baseline for lay-ins. He also attacked the rack from the wing off one or two dribbles. When Hughes scored in close, he had no problem converting through contact. Hughes displayed fantastic rim-to-rim speed as he produced points on the fast break too. His ability to crash the offensive glass for put backs was impressive.

Malik is a prospect that always plays tough and bigger than his measurements. He’s a college basketball prospect given his length, skillful footwork in and around the paint and his potential as a wing who can put it on the floor and get to the rim and hit the jumper. More of a catch and shoot threat with the jumper but shows the ability to pull up and hit shots off the dribble. Footwork and shot mechanics are evident.

Hughes (formerly of Cheltenham) is traditional small forward with an extraordinary deep bag of scoring moves. Those skills combined with his size and athleticism made Hughes (21 points) unstoppable from the rim to fifteen feet out. Against George School at the Kobe Bryant Classic, Hughes produced points on post ups, dives to the cup and via the offensive glass. He also attacked the rack from the wing off one or two dribbles. Once he was in the paint, Hughes powered through contact for a tough hoop or scored over smaller defenders. Hughes’ ability to bully defenders until he gets to his spots was impressive.

Hughes thrived scoring in the mid-range with his jump shot. He finished with 20 points. He was active on the boards and had no problems running the floor in the flow of the game. He is a mismatch to opposing teams because he can stretch defenses with shooting and can finish inside. He is able to guard multiple positions due to his size and length.

Hughes is dangerous wherever he catches the ball because there’s no spot he can’t get to, especially versus other forwards. If he gets it around the arc, then he can drive and shoot over defenders or back his man down into the post. Hughes can create for others out of his post ups and use his long arms to clean the glass too.

In his first two fall ball events with his new squad, Hughes (formerly of Cheltenham) has looked solid. Now that this dynamic perimeter prospect has gelled with his new teammates, a breakout weekend is a definite possibility. Hughes is a big guard with a scorer’s mentality. He destroys opponents off the dribble because he can attack the rack going left or right and then finish strong with either hand. His tight handles are unique for a 6’7” player. Additionally, Hughes can produce points in the mid-range via pull-ups and floaters. Hughes owns the length, speed, agility, and hops to be a significant threat in the open court too
