Jones also had his hand in forcing Lawrence Academy out of their 2-3 zone because he made a few long three-balls which, in conjunction with Ward’s, were just too much to overcome for LA. He also attacked the glass and finished successfully on numerous occasions; he’s so composed and patient in the lane, and I love how he gets to two feet. Defensively, Cushing stuck Jones on Evan Mitchner in the second half, which slowed him down greatly. He can stay with anyone – no matter how quick – on the defensive end. He’ll have his hands full with

Jones needs to be talked about as one of the best defenders in the region. He always guards the opposing team’s best guard – yesterday it was Jenkins from Worcester – and seems to know the scouting report on them quite well. He stays in front and doesn’t take too many chances, but he’s big, strong and long enough to really stymy point guards and even some wings. Offensively, he won’t wow you with any one skill but also doesn’t really have an offensive weakness; he can shoot it a bit from the three and mid-range, and he’s a good strong-hand driver. He’ll step into a nice role at Penn with his defensive instincts and IQ.

The UPenn commit has improved dramatically with his consistency to knock down shots, maybe that is because of his uptick in confidence I witnessed. He definitely has worked on his body strength. On the defense side of the ball great understanding of tagging players and not allowing easy buckets no matter the size difference when on or off the ball defense. He defended a guard who is a Top 50 ESPN 2025 commit and held him to 8 points.

Jones was attached at the hip to Tillery for the entirety of Saturday’s matchup between Cushing and New Hampton. The 6-foot-4 guard/wing is excellent defensively, even though he may not get a lot of steals or blocks; he just slides his feet really well and doesn’t take too many chances on that end, but he almost never gets beat off the dribble. Offensively, he can make an open three here and there and is good at attacking closeouts. I would imagine he’ll play a defensive/ball mover role at Penn next year but is ready to do so right now.

Jones was one of the best perimeter defenders I saw on Saturday. He slides his feet incredibly well and has very active hands once he beats the offensive player to his spot. He’s also very well-conditioned and doesn’t take any possessions off. Offensively, Jones has some creation chops, the ability to drive closeouts effectively, and is a big time shooter from the outside – everything you could want from a role-player wing. The Penn commit will be a wonderful piece next season; I think he’s pretty ready to play college hoops right now.

Jones made two announcements this week; first announcing that he will attend Cushing Academy for a post-graduate year and then sharing that he has committed to the University of Pennsylvania as a member of their class of 2025. One of the more complete back-court prospects in the region, Jones is a versatile guard that does a bit of everything on the offensive end of the floor. Above all, he’s a knockdown shooter from the perimeter, but he also shows glimpses of potential as a playmaker who makes good decisions with the ball. This seems like a tremendous fit as Penn gets a winner that should be ready from Day 1 to contribute in the Ivy League.

Jones, who just received an offer from Brown University, has done a whole lot of winning over the past 12 months, both at Rivers and with the Middlesex Magic. The scoring guard has proven to be a crafty finisher off the bounce, utilizing an assortment of floaters, euro-steps, and bank shots to score at the rim. He’s a high level shooter in catch and shoot situations and does a good job of leveraging his shooting to create driving opportunities. Defensively, he’s got a high IQ that allows him to consistently be in the right position within his team’s defensive schemes. He’s a good athlete that’s capable of guarding up and down a perimeter position as well. I’d expect that he’ll be popular with high academic colleges and universities this summer on the grassroots circuit.
