I’ve certainly seen Moesch play better games, but even when the opposing team tries to shut him down offensively, he still finds a way to make them pay. Against a Cheshire team that aggressively blitzed him on pick and rolls, the Siena commit consistently made smart decisions and reads. He dragged out the big-man defender and then either found Edema in the paint for a dunk or kicked it to the weak side shooter for a closeout-attack opportunity. He also picked his spots for threes and drives to the lane, including a clutch and-one down the stretch. No matter what pick and roll coverage you play on Moesch, he’ll figure out how to beat it, especially as the game goes on.

Moesch, a senior guard out of Cushing Academy in Massachusetts, has continued to show out on the biggest of stages this winter. Cushing Academy sits as the top of the AA standings, sporting a 10-0 record in league games behind the play of their talented lead guard. Moesch is arguably the best creator in New England, playing with elite floor vision and the ability to make any pass imaginable. He’s a big time competitor and has the ability to score it in a variety of ways, at multiple levels. On top of all that, he continues to find ways to help his team win basketball games, something that is noticable every time he takes the floor. Moesch will continue his career in the fall at Siena College.

Unsurprisingly, Moesch came to play in both the semifinal and final games of Cushing’s NEBL season. The 6-foot guard didn’t have any trouble with Putnam’s aggressive and handsy defense; he consistently blew by quick defenders for athletic finishes at the rim, floaters in the lane, or step back threes beyond the perimeter. He also set up his teammates for a number of cuts, many of which came after he put the defender in jail out of the pick and roll. Even when it seems like the entire defense is meant to make him force shots, Moesch makes the simple play—but he can also take over a game at a moment’s notice. He is so special, and the NEBL will miss him.

Moesch didn’t put up insane stats this weekend, but the box score doesn’t tell the story of how impactful he was for Cushing. Against CATS, the 6-foot guard handled the blitz and double team out of the pick and roll beautifully, consistently making timely and accurate passes to the short roller. Even though he didn’t get an assist on many of these plays, he moved the defense and made the correct, yet simple, offensive play every time. He was also, of course, able to beat the blitz on a number of possessions for amazing finishes and dump downs at the rim. Moesch was calm, cool and collected under pressure all weekend, and it was just another piece of evidence that he’ll be an awesome college player next year at Siena.

I’ve been around basketball as a coach at the high school and college level, a player, a scout, a commentator, and a writer—I’ve seen thousands of high school basketball players. But Moesch is on a short list of the players I’ve had the most fun watching. The 6-foot guard has a rhythm and bounce to his handle that makes him incredibly difficult to stay in front of, and he has special hops for his size. He can shoot it from three, he can throw any pass you’d want him to, and he can finish at the rim with great athleticism. The feel, skill, and explosiveness are there in spades, and he does it all while giving the fans a show. Bring some popcorn, because Moesch is an absolute joy to watch compete. He’ll be a mid-major star for Siena next season. Mark my words.

Moesch is back to his normal shenanigans—beating players off the dribble, throwing one-handed no-look passes in the pick and roll, finishing with insane athleticism and touch at the rim, and making shots from three off the dribble. He looks as comfortable as ever and seems even more intent on getting to the hoop this season, something he probably could’ve done more of last year. Moesch is the key cog on this Cushing team and is going to keep them in any game with any prep school team throughout the country. He might be the most exciting point guard in the nation. Appointment viewing.
