Matney continues to climb the rankings with the strides he has made in becoming a more versatile and dependable offensive player. He has the confidence to operate with the ball in his hands, create his own opportunities and set up teammates, but his ability to contribute without controlling every possession has also become a strength. He moves well off the ball, finds openings with timely cuts and has shown he can knock down perimeter shots when defenses give him space. That balance is beginning to separate him and it will be important for Arapahoe as he prepares to take on a larger role this season. With his ability to score and facilitate Matney has the tools to become one of Arapahoe’s most important players. If he continues building on his development another jump in his game and ranking could be well within reach
Matney is starting to develop a balanced game, and with the way that Arapahoe will play this year, they’ll need him to step up and be one of their best players. Matney has the potential to be as he’s comfortable with the ball in his hands, but also can play off-ball and let someone else operate as he works around them. He cuts, knocks down 3’s when the shot is there, creates for others, and we’ve been seeing that balance start to separate him as a player. We just want to see it more consistently, and he can put that all on display at our showcase this weekend. A big performance from him this weekend can get more eyes on him, but also boost his stock even more. With the other guards around him, this could be the turning point for him that I feel he should capitalize on.
Matney has consistently shown his ability to both score and facilitate at Arapahoe, but this summer his all around game continued to take another step forward. He plays with confidence, keeps defenders on their heels and has a great feel for when to create for himself or set up teammates. His ability to control the pace, make smart decisions and produce offensively makes him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses. As he continues to expand his game and embrace a larger role, Matney is positioning himself as a key piece for Arapahoe and a deserving riser in the upcoming rankings
Matney was the team’s leading scorer a season ago, but it was a balanced bunch that fed off of each other, which has its benefits. He used that as a way to play within the flow but also step out of it for 1-on-1 buckets. Matney plays both on and off-ball. He reads the court and causes so much gravity that shooters get open looks. Matney had some tough finishes in the games that we watched, and he’s not shy at all; he was getting his shots up. He competed, grabbed boards, and one right up for a few easy baskets. He’s a solid player that I certainly want to see more of.
