While Bartels made the two biggest plays of the game for Holmen with the game on the line, it was Berget who kept Holmen within striking distance of frontrunning Amery for most of the game. The stead and skilled backcourt prospect had 20 points to lead Holmen. He picked his spots well as he had two three-pointers, got to the line to finish two and-one opportunities and also scored from the mid range for the Vikings, who improved to 10-4 with the comeback triumph.
He showed he can do lots of crafty things with the ball. Broke off double teams tonight on numerous instances in addition to out-dribbling several on-ball defenders. Has a smooth floater that could translate well at the next level despite his size. Vision looked really good. Loved finding open guys in the corner which helped add to his assist total. Also hit a deep 3-pointer later in the game which he immediately followed with a steal-and-score.
While Berget is a bit under 6’0″, he makes up for that with grit and a determined style of play. He has a solid build and will not shy away from contact when driving to the hoop. He can convert through hard contact and uses his agility to either make the bucket or dump off to a teammate, often with a dash of creativity. He is also a sniper from long distance. The left-hander shot 45.8% from beyond the arc in his sophomore campaign and knocked down more than a handful of threes in the two games I watched last evening. Berget has a quick cross-over and will use shot and ball fakes to get the defender off balance before penetrating with either hand, although he does take advantage of his strong left when the opportunity is there.
Facing off against likely the most loaded team at the event, Alex was fearless going up against bigger players. Just found ways to create separation on the perimeter to get off his shot, but wasn’t afraid to drive to the hoop either. Showed excellent footwork to stop on two feet, get guys in the air, and then pivot towards the basket to finish inside. Not the biggest or most athletic player, but is so crafty and knows how to use the tools he has to find ways to impact the game. Another thing that stood out was how much fun you could tell Alex was having out on the court. Always had a smile on his face and was talking with other players throughout the game.
