Kevin Daniels | Prep Hoops Scout
He’s a physical guard who uses his lower body strength to bully his way into advantages and play through contact. Once he gets downhill, he can finish confidently with either hand. He’s got real craft in his bag hesitations, stop and go bursts, and change of pace moves that constantly put defenders on their heels.

Adjusting to a new role off the bench, McLaren showed no signs of discomfort, still playing significant minutes and contributing a mature double-figure effort to Scanlan’s upset win. The sophomore lead guard would score 13 points on just seven shots, playing efficiently with his decisionmaking and shot selection. He showed added comfort as a shooter from the perimeter with a repeatable, compact stroke and was also able to navigate into the paint off the dribble to make plays for his teammates. McLaren also stood out with his toughness defending at the point of attack. He’s on the smaller side and not the most explosive athlete but his skill level and steely confidence should see him attract D1 recruitment moving forward.

due to injury. The sophomore guard got better as the game went on, finishing with 20 points including 16 in the second half and 11 in the fourth quarter. He was aggressive getting to spots off the bounce, showing polished mechanics in the midrange to create space and convert over lengthier defenders. McLaren also showed capable range out to 3 as well as the ability to get into gaps for easy buckets when slotted off the ball. While a willing passer, he does have to continue to improve his shot selection and ball security, but the future nonetheless appears bright for the young guard as he steps into an increased spotlight this winter.

While camp settings can often favor guards who are wired to go look for their own, McLaren impressed by bucking that trend and operating as a pure floor general. A Top-60 all-star selection, he was effective running the show while consistently getting his wings and bigs the ball in proper positions to score. McLaren showed the ability to keep defenses honest as a scorer, but his ability to make his teammates better as a playmaker should be huge as he steps up in the rotation for Scanlan and continues to emerge as a D1 prospect.
