Continue ReadingThe initial rankings for the class of 2025 were published this past Friday. This is the first time that the sophomore class has been introduced in a rankings format and the first time many of these players have been mentioned outside of their respective regions. The opening top ten list is a group of players who have already created buzz on the next level with their play and should be players to watch in the forthcoming season. Let us take a look at the players who consist of the top ten for the class of 2025.
1. Drew Timmons Drew Timmons 6'6" | SF Archbishop Hannan | 2025 State #52 Nation LA (6’5″ / Archbishop Hannan)
Timmons was a first team, all-state selection who helped lead his team to the Division II state championship. He is a player who uses a series of up-fakes and good footwork to get the shots he wants. Timmons has an advanced offensive game and can score from anywhere. He is not bad on defense either and can hold up in man-to-man situations. If his sophomore year is anything like his first one, teams better watch out.
2. Christopher Cenac Christopher Cenac 6'9" | SF Isidore Newman | 2025 State #54 Nation LA (6’7″ / Newman)
When it comes to doing multiple things on the floor well, Cenac is definitely one of the top sophomores. Chris is automatic from the free throw line in with his mid-range jumper. He is also a force on the offensive boards. His defensive ability to switch on every position on the floor makes him unique. Cenac is a rare find in any class and it is what makes him highly touted in this one.
3. Christopher Birden Christopher Birden 6'8" | SF Isidore Newman | 2025 State #282 Nation LA (6’7″ / Newman)
During the Prep Hoops freshmen showcase, Birden was a player who was all over the floor. With his 6’7″ frame, he showed the ability to rebound the ball, handle the ball in transition situations, and finish with authority during transition. Birden was not shy about playing on the perimeter as well. He is a player who showed plenty of promise and has a very high ceiling.
4. Jeremiah Lucas Jeremiah Lucas 6'4" | SG Bonnabel | 2025 State #311 Nation LA (6’2″ / Bonnabel)
If there was an all freshman team to be named last season, Lucas would have been on the first team. His ability to score and rebound on the varsity level was unique. What set him apart from many varsity players, not just freshmen, was the consistency of his outside shooting and the way he read passing lanes. Lucas can play both ends of the floor and has the potential to be the top player in this class.
5. Antron Mason II Antron Mason II 6'1" | CG Wossman | 2025 State LA (6’1″ / Wossman)
Mason was a contributor from day one with the Wossman Wildcats as they made another title game appearance this past season. Whether he is on or off the ball, Mason is a problem offensively. He can play as a pass-first point or he can scar teams up from outside as a catch-and-shoot guard. Mason is a player who enhances the chances of his team winning when he is on the floor. A true difference maker he is.
6. Xavier Ferguson Xavier Ferguson 6'2" | CG Zachary | 2025 State #322 Nation LA (6’1″ / Zachary)
The 2024 LA Broncos were one of the best teams on the Prep Hoops circuit and Xavier Ferguson Xavier Ferguson 6'2" | CG Zachary | 2025 State #322 Nation LA was the second best player on the team. He has a full arsenal and is an offensive threat at any level. Ferguson is also a player who can defend on the perimeter and is not afraid to rebound on both ends. He is a player who has a ton of potential. If Brandon Hardy Brandon Hardy 6'4" | SG Zachary | 2023 State #234 Nation LA is Batman at Zachary, Xavier Ferguson Xavier Ferguson 6'2" | CG Zachary | 2025 State #322 Nation LA may be a fitting Robin.
7. Chris Shiflett Chris Shiflett 5'10" | PG Evangel | 2025 State LA (5’9″ / Evangel)
Shiflett played against competition on the Prep Hoops circuit and in various other showcases. Each time, he rose to the occasion and showed why he is the top rated point guard in this class. Shiflett has all the dribble moves to get into the lane and a consistent jumper. He can make every pass on the floor with either hand as well. As far as point guards with a high IQ, Shiflett is as good as they come in any classification.
8. Nico B Jones Nico B Jones 6'2" | CG Catholic | 2025 State LA (6’2″ / Catholic)
The sophomore guard from Catholic has a ton of potential as a combo guard. He can handle the ball against pressure and bring it up the floor. Jones can also run an offense and place people in the proper positions to be successful. He is also a knockdown shooter on the perimeter which makes him a threat from anywhere. With the game he has, Jones can help Catholic make serious strides this season.
9. Jamal Drewery Jamal Drewery 5'10" | PG Scotlandville | 2025 State LA (5’10” / Scotlandville)
Drewery has been a varsity guard since the 8th grade. Now, as he embarks on his sophomore campaign, he still may have only scratched the surface with his play. Drewery is quick on the defensive end and can disrupt offenses with his hands or thie way he reads passes. Offensively, he can orchestrate the break better than most guards, shoot it from three, and anticipate passes in exquisite fashion. He is as good as it gets at the point.
10. Kerry McMillian Kerry McMillian 6'1" | PG John F Kennedy | 2025 State LA (6’1″ / John F. Kennedy)
McMillian is a skilled guard who can get a number of things done on the floor. He can put it on the deck and get to the rim driving left or right. McMillian can also light it up from behind the arc with regularity. His array of finishes around the rim shows the variety in his game as well. McMillian may be only a sophomore, but he has a very mature floor game.
The top ten players in this initial ranking display the versatility of the players Louisiana has. This is just the tip of the iceberg. 2025 is a class that will have plenty of players to watch this year.
