The 2021-2022 high school season ended in March and the Prep Hoops Circuit is in full swing. And while a lot of our coverage is circuit-heavy as well as travel ball as a hole, we’re also taking a look back at the high school season and all of the fantastic players that made an impact across the state. We also made a decision to do something a little different this year. Instead of traditional All State teams where it’s not based on what class you’re in and it’s just the best players in the state, we went the other direction. We’ll be posting All Star teams for Class 6A, 5A and 4A. Along with combined teams for 3A/2A and A and B. Stay tuned throughout the week for more postseason content. Also stay tuned for next week where we announce our Player Of The Year and then take a VERY early look at the 2022-2023 high school season.
In this post, we take a look at the five best players in Class 5A this season. And just like this season, the list of potential selections was dominated by players from Del City and Memorial. Those two were the top two teams in the state and four out of the five picks are from those two programs. There was plenty of good basketball elsewhere in Class 5A but these two programs absolutely dominated from beginning to end.
Adante Holiman Adante Holiman 6'0" | PG McAlester | 2022 State #224 Nation OK – 2022 Guard – McAlester
For two seasons now, McAlester senior guard Adante Holiman Adante Holiman 6'0" | PG McAlester | 2022 State #224 Nation OK has been one of the flat out best scorers in the state. He put up numbers that were eye-popping and was clearly one of the best at filling up a stat sheet. However, Holiman and the Buffaloes came into this season with a different intensity. And Holiman had more help around him. With that same scoring mentality plus some improved players around him, Holiman and the Buffaloes completely turned around the McAlester basketball program and had it as one of the teams in 5A on the east side that would contend and threaten for a state tournament spot. Before, that was the knock on Holiman. He was a fantastic scorer but the team was losing. That was not the case this year and he had to earn respect across the state for the turnaround this season. Holiman has been considered a top ten prospect in Oklahoma’s 2022 class for a few years now and he showed why this season. not only is he an elite scorer, he’s become a better overall player.
Brandon Garrison Brandon Garrison 6'8" | C Evans | 2023 State #33 Nation OK – 2023 Forward – Del City
Now we get to the start of the four straight players from Del City and Memorial. We start with Del City’s 2023 big man Brandon Garrison Brandon Garrison 6'8" | C Evans | 2023 State #33 Nation OK . Coming into his junior season, Garrison was already considered one of the top prospects in the state’s 2023 class. And Del City had plenty of hype around the program as they made the drop down to Class 5A. Garrison improved greatly from his sophomore to junior seasons and became arguably the most dominant big man in Oklahoma high school hoops. And that’s what we’ve been waiting to see from Garrison. You could see flashes of just how dominating of a big man he could be and he finally started putting it all together this season. While the year didn’t end the way the Eagles would have liked, it’s hard to ignore the fact that they’ll almost all be back and will once again be the favorites to make it back to contending for a gold ball. The combination of size, skill and defensive ability has Garrison as not only one of the top prospects in the state but one of the best players.
Bradyn Hubbard Bradyn Hubbard 6'7" | PF Tulsa Memorial | 2022 State OK – 2022 Forward – Memorial
The first of two players from the state champion Memorial Chargers is senior forward Bradyn Hubbard Bradyn Hubbard 6'7" | PF Tulsa Memorial | 2022 State OK . An absolute double-double machine, Hubbard was one of the more reliable forwards in Oklahoma this season. As we write about with the second Memorial standout, the Chargers had without a doubt the best and most talented team in the state this season. They were absolutely loaded and you can fairly make an argument that they should have had a perfect season. Hubbard was so consistent that you never had to worry about the production you would get from him. While other players on this list might be considered more “flashy”, Hubbard was the steady presence that helped lead the Chargers to another state championship. Averaging a double double throughout the season, Hubbard played his role on this year’s Memorial team incredibly well and that’s a big reason why they added another gold ball to the trophy case. In my opinion, Hubbard’s stock rose dramatically after his senior year.
Terry McMorris Terry McMorris 6'5" | SF Douglass | 2023 State OK – 2023 Forward – Del City
Just like with his Del City teammate Brandon Garrison Brandon Garrison 6'8" | C Evans | 2023 State #33 Nation OK , fellow 2023 standout Terry McMorris Terry McMorris 6'5" | SF Douglass | 2023 State OK made a big leap during his junior season. Coming into his junior year, McMorris was already established as one of the top prospects in the 2023 class. It was a fact that the athletic forward had one of the highest upsides among the elite prospects. With his combination of size and skills, McMorris has the ability to be one of the best players in the state and a complete game changer. And that’s what we saw from him throughout Del City’s lengthy winning streak, on their way to the state championship game. McMorris is incredibly skilled when it comes to offense and also improved on defense and became more of a complete player on both sides of the floor. We’re very intrigued to see what McMorris adds in the next few months to take that next step as a player. And seriously, look at this Del City team and what they bring back for the upcoming season. Whether they’re in 5A or 6A, the Eagles are going to be a big favorite to capture another gold ball.
Tyreece Frierson Tyreece Frierson 5'10" | PG Tulsa Memorial | 2022 State OK – 2022 Guard – Memorial
It was blatantly apparent from the first time I saw Memorial’s Tyreece Frierson Tyreece Frierson 5'10" | PG Tulsa Memorial | 2022 State OK at a November scrimmage that not only was he one of the best players in the state, but he had that special ability to put a team on his back. The Chargers added another gold ball to their trophy case and while Frierson was special, he also had a very talented team around him. In addition to Hubbard, he also had two special 2023 prospects that will be leading Memorial next season. But in an alternative world, what would Memorial look like without the talent around Frierson? We think they’d be just fine. He’s that type of player that can not only fill it up in the points category but he gets everyone involved around him. He was absolutely a special player for Memorial this season and will go down as one of the school’s best at the point guard position. So not only did he earn his spot within the best of Class 5A, but Frierson was without a doubt one of the best players in the state of Oklahoma this season.
