The 2021-2022 high school season ended in March and the Prep Hoops Circuit is in full swing. And while a lot of our coverage is circuit-heavy as well as travel ball as a hole, we’re also taking a look back at the high school season and all of the fantastic players that made an impact across the state. We also made a decision to do something a little different this year. Instead of traditional All State teams where it’s not based on what class you’re in and it’s just the best players in the state, we went the other direction. We’ll be posting All Star teams for Class 6A, 5A and 4A. Along with combined teams for 3A/2A and A and B. Stay tuned throughout the week for more postseason content. Also stay tuned for next week where we announce our Player Of The Year and then take a VERY early look at the 2022-2023 high school season.
In our final post, we take a look at the best of the best in Class A and B combined. While the seniors certainly stick out, just like in the other classes, we see plenty of young talent in the smaller schools as well. Here’s a look at the top five players from Class A and B from this past season.
Connor Clayton Connor Clayton 6'2" | SG Stuart | 2022 State OK – 2022 Guard – Stuart
Coming into the year we knew that Connor Clayton Connor Clayton 6'2" | SG Stuart | 2022 State OK of Stuart was one of the best players in small school basketball and that ended up playing out that way. Stuart came up just shy of making it to the state tournament and I definitely would have lost that bet coming into the year. I’m still surprised they fell short but nevertheless, Clayton has been one of the more consistent stars when it comes to small school ball in Oklahoma. For well over a year, the Stuart senior has been one of the better scorers in the state and he just continued to get better and better as his career went on. As a senior, Clayton was one of the better scorers in the state and averaged over 20 points per game. Even against bigger competition Clayton still was one of the best on the floor.
DJ Dill – 2024 Guard – Caddo
We knew coming into the state tournament that Caddo sophomore DJ Dill was the real deal as he had already eclipsed 1,000 career points and was averaging over 20 points per game. Then we saw him in person at the Big House and it was clear that he would end up being one of the better small school prospects to come out of the state’s 2024 class. And this is a class that is getting deeper and deeper as more prospects emerge. Dill is an outstanding guard prospect that can score from just about anywhere on the floor. He’s able to get to the basket at will and over the next two seasons, he’s going to arguably be the best player on the floor every time out. That’ll end up putting a big target on his back but he appears to be ready for it.
Hayden Brooks Hayden Brooks 6'1" Davenport | 2022 OK – 2022 Guard – Davenport
Just like with Connor Clayton Connor Clayton 6'2" | SG Stuart | 2022 State OK , Hayden Brooks Hayden Brooks 6'1" Davenport | 2022 OK is another prolific scorer that didn’t get as much pub this year because Davenport fell short of the state tournament. Led by Brooks, Davenport enjoyed a regular season full of blowouts and victories. They went into the playoffs with a perfect record but got upset by eventual state champ Tushka and then lost in the area round. Despite that, Brooks could not be stopped when he was on the floor. And just like Clayton, he was one of the best scorers in Class A. He averaged just shy of 30 points per game. While we try to cover as much of Oklahoma as possible, small school ball just doesn’t get the same coverage as the larger schools and that’s a shame because Brooks was dominant this year.
Jaken Weedn – 2024 Guard – Glencoe
Glencoe had one of the best teams in the state so we had to have a representative from the Panthers on this list. This was a team that was so explosive on offense and was full of talent from the seniors on down the lineup. But Jaken Weedn, the sophomore guard stood out, especially on the brightest stage in the state tournament. Weedn came up clutch throughout the state tournament and again in the title game as he helped lead the Panthers to the gold ball. Glencoe was incredibly explosive throughout this season and we don’t see it changing in the future with Weedn and several other standouts returning for the next season.
Nolan Gore – 2022 Guard – Hydro-Eakly
Senior guard Nolan Gore might be the best of the best when it comes to the small school basketball standouts. He helped lead Hydro-Eakly to an undefeated season as a junior and then got the Bobcats back to the title game as a senior. Gore is a big guard that could do just about everything on the floor. He could shoot it, he could get others involved and his size was a big problem for most teams to deal with throughout the season. The Bobcats came up just shy of winning back to back titles but Gore still stood out once again in the Big House. He was at his best on the biggest stage and was arguably the best player in Class A and B combined.
