The 2021-2022 high school season ended in March and the Prep Hoops Circuit is in full swing. And while a lot of our coverage is circuit-heavy as well as travel ball as a hole, we’re also taking a look back at the high school season and all of the fantastic players that made an impact across the state. We also made a decision to do something a little different this year. Instead of traditional All State teams where it’s not based on what class you’re in and it’s just the best players in the state, we went the other direction. We’ll be posting All Star teams for Class 6A, 5A and 4A. Along with combined teams for 3A/2A and A and B. Stay tuned throughout the week for more postseason content. Also stay tuned for next week where we announce our Player Of The Year and then take a VERY early look at the 2022-2023 high school season.
In this post, we take a look at the five best players from 3A and 2A combined. Three players from Class 3A and two players from Class 2A made this list and it features some of the best young talent in the state as four of the five picks are sophomores or younger.
Dayton Forsythe Dayton Forsythe 6'3" | PG Dale | 2024 State #206 Nation OK – 2024 Guard – Dale
It was pretty clear at the beginning of the season that Dale sophomore Dayton Forsythe Dayton Forsythe 6'3" | PG Dale | 2024 State #206 Nation OK wasn’t your typical sophomore. And this season played out just like that as Forsythe helped lead the Pirates to their first ever state championship in boys basketball. Forsythe was unstoppable this season and nearly led the Pirates to a perfect season. What was impressive is that Forsythe had a target on his back all season, the Pirates played a tough schedule, and none of that slowed him down. Forsythe has become a legit top ten prospect within the 2024 class and will be knocking on the door of moving up in future ranking updates. His performances on the biggest stages make him a special and unique talent and we’re looking forward to seeing what he does for an encore.
Ethan Wilkerson Ethan Wilkerson 6'7" | PF Madill | 2024 State OK – 2024 Forward – Silo
Behind super sophomore Ethan Wilkerson Ethan Wilkerson 6'7" | PF Madill | 2024 State OK , Silo ended their state tournament drought and the Rebels punched their ticket to the Big House. Wilkerson became on the radar about halfway thru the regular season and it was apparent that he deserved to be considered one of the better 2024 prospects and that 2024 class is shaping up nicely. Wilkerson is a skilled big man and has nice touch around the rim and is continuing to get better and better. We expect Wilkerson to continue to improve over the next two seasons and I think it’s safe to say that Wilkerson, with the combination of his size and skill, will be considered a top prospect within the state’s class. Playing 2A ball isn’t stopping Wilkerson from being considered one of the best in the ’24 class.
Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6'3" | CG Douglass | 2025 State OK – 2025 Forward – Millwood
While this list is full of 2024 prospects, there’s also a 2025 prospect that’s just the second freshman to be on our All Star teams this year. Millwood freshman Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6'3" | CG Douglass | 2025 State OK helped lead the Falcons to a dramatic victory in the 3A state championship game. What’s scary is Nickens came off the bench this season and will surely be in the starting lineup next season. He’s already considered by many to be the best player in the state’s 2025 class and it’s easy to see why. He doesn’t look like a freshman and his confidence while on the court definitely doesn’t remind us of a freshman. Nickens certainly has the chance to be a pretty special talent and it’ll be interesting to see whether or not he’ll still be considered the best of his class in three years.
Luke Gray Luke Gray 6'7" | PF Oklahoma Christian | 2024 State OK – 2024 Forward – Oklahoma Christian School
As you can see, 3A and 2A has some serious talent in the 2024 class and that class is already taking shape to be pretty deep compared to the 2022 class. And one prospect that is already considered a top ten prospect and arguably has the most room to grow out of the top ten is Luke Gray Luke Gray 6'7" | PF Oklahoma Christian | 2024 State OK out of Oklahoma Christian School. Athletically, Gray is absolutely off the charts and was one of the best athletes in 3A basketball this season. He was a double-double machine and could absolutely fill it up from the floor. The football scout in me also sees Gray as being an absolute game-wrecker if he put on a helmet and pads. But in basketball alone, he’s already considered a top prospect. We mentioned the room to grow, it’ll be fun to see what Gray looks like after another season under his belt.
Zach Hidalgo Zach Hidalgo 6'8" | C Hooker | 2022 State OK – 2022 Forward – Hooker
Way out in western Oklahoma, Hooker senior forward Zach Hidalgo Zach Hidalgo 6'8" | C Hooker | 2022 State OK was one of the more dominant players in the senior class when it came to big men. He didn’t get as much hype as some of the other top forwards within the 2022 class because he was out in the panhandle but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t among the state’s best at the position. He showed that when he helped lead the Bulldogs to the Class 2A state tournament. Hidalgo looked the part at 6’8 and had incredible touch around the basket. He also had the ability to move outside of the paint and still be effective. Hooker played primarily out in western Oklahoma and against schools Kansas and Texas. He’s the only senior to make this breakdown for 3A and 2A.
