Below we take a look at some of the top players and teams that will be in Winterset this weekend.
Dates: June 19-20
Location: Winterset High School
(Penrod Gym, Husky Gym, Junior High Gym)

Teams to Watch
AHSTW: The Vikings were fantastic last year, going 20-3 before losing to Treynor in the substate semifinals. They bring back 99.6% of their scoring and drop down to 1A for the 2021-22 postseason. Led by the high-scoring trio of Raydden Grobe Raydden Grobe 6'2" | SF AHSTW | 2022 State IA , Brayden Lund Brayden Lund 6'4" | SF AHSTW | 2023 State IA , and Kyle Sternberg Kyle Sternberg 6'4" | SG AHSTW | 2023 State IA , they can score in a variety of ways. They’ll get tested by an athletic 4A team in Des Moines East, and a very good 2A Aplington-Parkersburg team, which should give us a good idea just how good this group can be.
Ankeny: The Hawks were very young last year, losing a lot of production from the 2019 4A championship team, but battled to a 10-10 record. They bring back 84.7% of their scoring, with their top six scorers coming back. The young backcourt of Carson Johnson Carson Johnson 5'11" | PG Ankeny | 2024 State IA and Brayden Drea Brayden Drea 5'10" | PG Indianola | 2023 State IA could be one of the best in 4A this season, and senior wing Ryan Crandall Ryan Crandall 6'1" | SF Ankeny | 2022 State IA can impact the game on both ends of the floor. Look for Ankeny to be a much improved team this winter.
Aplington-Parkersburg: A 2A semifinalist last year, the Falcons bring back over 73% of their scoring, led by Upper Iowa commit Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA . Always balanced, deep and explosive, this group has a ton of scoring threats, and Mackie pairs well with fellow backcourt mates Garrett Hempen Garrett Hempen 5'10" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2023 State IA and Gavin Thomas Gavin Thomas 6'1" | SG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2024 State IA . They’ll once again be one of the top teams in 2A this winter.
Ballard: The Bombers were the top team in 3A for a majority of last season, and while they lose a good chunk of production, dynamic guard Ashton Hermann Ashton Hermann 6'4" | SG Ballard | 2022 State IA returns. One of the best two-way players in the state, he can score in a hurry and is a pest on defense. Senior big man Kale Krogh Kale Krogh 6'6" | C Ballard | 2022 State IA , who recently committed to play offensive line at Iowa, provides an interior presence, but the Bombers will have a lot of new faces in key roles.
Bondurant-Farrar: Junior scoring wing Colby Collison Colby Collison 6'4" | SF Bondurant-Farrar | 2023 State IA returns to lead the Blue Jays, who were 13-11 last year, and bring back over 60% of their production.
Dallas Center-Grimes: The Mustangs will be missing star guard Cole Glasgow Cole Glasgow 6'2" | SG Dallas Center- Grimes | 2022 State IA , who will be participating in the MBCA Showcase in front of dozens of college coaches this weekend, but it’ll be a good chance to see how Bo Huston Bo Huston 5'10" | SG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2022 State IA runs the show. The Mustangs have some young talent that will be on display this weekend, so it’ll be a good chance for us to see some of the new pieces with Glasgow out of town.
Pella: The defending 3A champions bring back three of their top four scorers, and have a slew of young talent that is ready for bigger roles as well. Karl Miller Karl Miller 6'4" | SF Pella | 2022 State IA will be one of the top scoring threats in Winterset this weekend, a big wing who can really shoot it, and Noah Allen Noah Allen 5'11" | PG Pella | 2022 State IA is one of the state’s most deadly shooters as well. The Dutch may be the team to beat in 3A this year, again.
Pella Christian: The Eagles were 12-12 last year, but this is going to be one of the best teams in 2A, no matter what the record says. Playing in the loaded Little Hawkeye Conference, a young PC team was able to put together some quality wins over teams like Indianola, Norwalk, and Van Meter last season and bring back 91% of their scoring. Led by dominant two-way big man Eric Mulder Eric Mulder 6'8" | PF Pella Christian | 2022 State IA , the Eagles are going to be deep and skilled.
Valley: We’re not sure if Eli Raridon Eli Raridon 6'7" | PF Valley | 2022 State IA (Notre Dame football commit) will be playing this weekend, but if he is, the Tigers will have arguably the two most dominant players on the floor in Raridon and Ruot Bijiek Ruot Bijiek 6'8" | PF Valley | 2022 State IA . That dynamic duo is going to be one of the best tandems in 4A this winter, but the focus of our attention this weekend will be seeing how their guard play is developing.
Van Meter: Always one of the top teams in 2A, the Bulldogs bring back 85% of their scoring from last year’s state-qualifying team. Senior lead guard Chris Schreck Chris Schreck 5'10" | PG Van Meter | 2022 State IA leads the way for a team that brings back their top three scorers, and 12 of their top 13.
Winterset: The host Huskies bring back over 92% of their scoring to a team that got really shot after the holiday break, winning 10 of 11 games from January 8 to February 8. Senior guard Levi Gurwell Levi Gurwell 5'8" | SG Winterset | 2022 State IA is one of the top scorers in the event, and Dawson Forgy Dawson Forgy 5'11" | PG Winterset | 2022 State IA and Brayden Dinkla Brayden Dinkla 6'0" | PG Winterset | 2023 State IA give them some excellent ball-handling guards. The top six scorers are back for this group, and they’ve been great so far in June.
