The Class of 2030 made its presence felt at the Freshman Showcase in Aurora, with several young prospects showing they can already impact the game on both ends of the floor. Wise beyond their years with offensive prowess and defensive intensity, each of these seven players flashed significant upside that should have fans and coaches excited about what's ahead. For more coverage, see Top 5 Freshman Downhill Scorers.

One of most electric playmakers I saw in action. Pugh's floor is a 3 and D prospect – his ceiling is an offensive star. He caught fire from deep, buried a huge three in the final minute of play, and showed a natural feel for finding the open player. His length was a problem for opposing teams not just on offense but on defense – where he mastered the strip and score and repeatedly wreaked havoc. Pugh's pure scoring combined with scrappiness on defense lands him on this list. He should be on college coaches' radar.

Johnson played like a man among boys. The outside shot was there, as was his ability to take it to the hole, but his defensive intensity is what really jumped out. Johnson was a menace on that side of the ball, getting back first in transition and hounding opposing ball-handlers. In Johnson, you're getting a true hustle player who doesn't take plays off. His willingness to go all-out even when the ball wasn't in his hands made him one of the more consistent competitors on the floor. Well-rounded two-way player with skill on both sides of the ball.

The first thing I wrote down about Thomas was “flashes of mini Coby White.” A few plays later, I added “...but with more consistent defense.” Thomas' perimeter shooting was impressive all day long and he played with an edge defensively, swiping the ball with active hands. He has energy plug potential - the type of guy you bring off the bench and the whole team gets better. There is a lot to like about a shooting / combo guard who can stretch the floor offensively while refusing to cave on the defensive end.

The offensive and defensive rebounding is there for Smith Jr., as is the three point shooting and scoring in the paint. Smith Jr. towered over the competition, flashing eyebrow-raising athleticism and offensive decision-making. Great passing to teammates slashing to the hoop. My favorite moment of Smith Jr.'s was watching him get baited by an opposing player but proving he could rise to the challenge by hitting a huge three with his opponent flying in his face. Definitely a two-way prospect to watch.

Heisler made his presence felt defensively with length, athleticism, and a nose for the ball. He came up with multiple steals, including a few impressive chase-down plays after missed shots, and showed calculated timing as a shot blocker. On offense, Heisler's court vision stood out most - he saw the game clearly and with additional offensive coaching and attention at the next level, Heisler has the physical tools of an effective two-way player.

Garakat brings a useful combination of size, shooting, and defensive activity to the 2 position. He displayed strong rebounding skills for his position and showed enough offensive vision to make plays beyond simply knocking down the outside shot. His defensive motor also stood out, particularly in full-court press. The biggest area for growth for Garakat is his passing decision-making and ensuring he doesn't throw the ball into traffic, but there is plenty here to get excited about and for coaches to work with at the next level.

Bauer is a "right place, right time" type of player. He was nimble, high basketball IQ, a swiss army knife – good outside shot and ability to clean up around the rim. His work on the offensive glass provides countless second-chance opportunities and his toughness represents the type of player you want to go into battle with. I can't wait to see where this player is by the end of his high school career.
