Ben Howlett Elite Camp at IU-Indy - Top Performers, Part 1

August is, by far, the quietest month in what continues to creep closer to a 365-day content cycle covering Indiana High School Basketball. We have enjoyed a couple of quieter weeks and a bit more time outside of gym, but ultimately we love getting out and evaluating prospects. This weekend both Logan Greenwell and I had the opportunity to stop by the campus of IU-Indy to help evaluate the pool of talent taking part in the Ben Howlett Elite Camps. Here are some of the top individual performers from Sunday's event.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />    You could make a strong argument that Brown IV was the most impressive prospect in the gym on Sunday at IU-Indy. He certainly was on the short list of top prospects. The 6'6" wing/forward had a lot of success utilizing his fluid athleticism to drive it right and elevate to finish over the defense. He was excellent as an at-rim and intermediate range finisher. Brown IV also flashed his versatile defensive ability. It was easy to see why he is ranked as a Top 20 prospect in Illinois' Class of 2028.     Combs earned Indiana Junior All-Star honors last season with Bloomington South and is also a standout on the football field. It was good to see him again on Sunday at the Ben Howlett Elite Camp. The 6'5" forward is always very aggressive offensively. He is strong and skilled inside, but also knocked down a few tough three-point shots as well. His face-up skill is intriguing. Combs is also consistently an excellent rebounder.     A major stock-riser from the summer, Dougherty continued his strong play on Sunday at the Ben Howlett Elite Camp. He is a massive interior presence with sneaky sound footwork and a very soft finishing touch. Dougherty has excellent hands as a rebounder, finisher, and passer. When he flashes to the elbow or high post he is a true threat to shoot it or pass it. Look for the West Vigo High School rising senior to be a highly sought after small college center.     Another prospect who was certainly in the "best in the gym" discussion was this versatile wing/forward from Scecina Memorial. Foster has already established himself this summer as one of the best defenders in the state of Indiana. However, it is unique offense game that is intriguing as well. He handles the ball well for his size, can finish with both hands in the paint, and is a very willing passer as well. The two-way impact he consistently creates will eventually lead to some scholarship offers.     Another impressive prospect at the Ben Howlett Elite Camp from the state of Illinois, this 6'6" wing was a consistent two-way threat on Sunday. Gilbert is very long and athletic which served him well in transition throughout the event. He was aggressive as a driver, active as a cutter, and was able to finish up above most defenders at the end of his drives. Also, defensively, he was in the passing lanes a lot which led to some run out layups and dunks. Gilbert is definitely one to watch in the Class of 2029 at Joliet Central High School.     We are starting to see consistent impressive performers stack up when evaluating this 6'0" guard from Marquette Catholic. He was good in June with his high school team, stood out with [program_tooltip program_id='2075551' first='Indiana' last='Game'] at times throughout the summer, and has been good at multiple events this month as well. Mays is very strong and quick when attacking the paint and is consistently active on the defensive end. He is definitely a good two-way point guard for small college programs to track heading into his senior season.     There was no keeping Thomas out of the paint on Sunday at the Ben Howlett Elite Camp. The 5'11" explosive playmaker had a ton of success attacking the basket. He was able to finish in a variety of ways while also showcasing his ability to make plays for his teammates. Thomas will be at Pike High School for his senior season helping to lead what will be a very talented backcourt. It will be interesting to see where his recruitment ultimately lands in the coming months.
