Round 1 & the season gave us answers, but it also created questions as the 6A bracket tightens. In Quadrant 2, matchups get tougher, rotations shrink, and stars are expected to rise. Here's what I'm watching closely, and who could swing momentum heading into Round 2. Here's a breakdown of Quadrant 2.

Use code dev30 for 30% off and secure access as we're finally in the postseason, so you don't miss any of our scouting.

Arvada West/Valor Christian

Will [player_tooltip player_id='2532146' first='Cooper' last='Vais']' consistency continue?

Vais has been the team's 2nd best player all season long, and his play the past couple of years has the Wildcats looking like contenders. He was shockingly good his sophomore season and took it up a level in his junior season. Vais has filled it up. He's put up 15.5 points, 6.9 points, and 3.4 assists as well, which is among some of the best stats in the 2027 class. Put in the fact that he helped lead Arvada West to a 21-2 record, and you see one of the most balanced players in the class. They'll need that play to continue for them to keep going in this run. He has to stay assertive, continue to contribute in all areas, and be decisive. He's a player who could become a respected name with a big run, as what he's done this year has gone a big under the radar.

JT Cross, the secret weapon

Cross is a 6'2 junior combo guard who has filled in the gaps at times for Valor Christian this season to help get them to this point, and now, in the biggest game of the season, he will have to step up again. With him, it's not about stats but about making momentum-changing plays to separate himself, and he does that. He's a player with contagious energy; he impacts the game without the ball and sets up offensively as well. He's a three-level scorer who is very confident as a player and can be a spark that Valor needs. He's a player we did not know too much about, but he continues to stand out with his play, and this is another opportunity to prove himself.

Grandview/Cherokee Trail

Which X Factor steps up in the rematch?

We saw this matchup a month ago, and it was one of the games of the year. Grandview got by with a 47-46 win, and it was a very low-scoring game where it came down to those who execute best being the difference. Who do I think that is? I believe that it is [player_tooltip player_id='1622332' first='Jason' last='Stroope']. Stroope has his moments where he likes what he sees, and he's taking advantage of his matchup, like when we saw him take 15 FGA's against Smoky Hill a couple of weeks ago or other games where he takes care of the ball and is the calm to the storm. A blend of the two would be great, where he's looking to score and contribute in ways other than simply scoring as well. We want to see him use his 6'2 frame as a rebounder. He has the size to affect the game with his length and be disruptive. That's what we did not see in the last matchup, but it can be the difference here.

Is [player_tooltip player_id='2381955' first='Jeremiah' last='Shortis'] back?

Shortis finally looks like himself. There was a bit of a learning curve for him and then a sitting-out period, but he finally looks to be finding his rhythm. In the last game against Grandview, he was inefficient and did not impact the game in ways he's capable of, and they needed him to. But now he's put together a solid stretch where he's used his 6'4 frame, he's scoring with ease, and finishing around the basket. He's getting to the FT line, taking his matchup personally, and back to the Shortis we saw this summer. He's the player to watch out for.

Eaglecrest vs. Liberty

Are the lights too bright for Kalimba?

[player_tooltip player_id='2381951' first='Clayton' last='Kalimba'] is truly one of the most improved players in the 2028 class. To go from not playing much as a freshman to now being one of the best players on the state champs, in year 2, is quite the jump. The thing is, he's been as consistent as they come as a scorer, and I want to know if that continues. He's been a consistent scorer, even in losses; he's a confident downhill attacker, and he has an elite handle. The 3-ball is falling, and that has opened up the rest of his game. I want to know if that continues when every possession matters for the defending champs. He uses his length for rebounds, he starts the break and gets out, and makes the right play. I know that this team will be well coached and ready for the moment, but let's see what kind of game we get from the standout sophomore.

Is it Bradley or Council?

I can't tell you how much I love this matchup. There are two teams ready to prove that they belong and are playing with a chip on their shoulder. Liberty has not won a marquee matchup, so this is the opportunity for them to do so. All eyes will be on Cam Cunningham but the two prospects whose presence can win them this game are [player_tooltip player_id='3026094' first='Isaiah' last='Bradley'] (13.2 ppg) and [player_tooltip player_id='2413403' first='Akai' last='Council'] (12.3 ppg). Those two will have a TOUGH matchup in front of them against a disciplined group who have been there, who are relentless, and they're up against a backcourt that provides chaos. Which one of them is going to go off and be the running mate who erupts? I feel like they've taken turns on who will be the offensive standout in games, but with the season on the line, who steps up? I truly feel as if the season advancing depends on which of these two separates themselves. If one is underwhelming, that may be it. But what if; what if they BOTH can get going!?

Rock Canyon/Pueblo West

Can [player_tooltip player_id='2574721' first='Jonah' last='Medina'] live up to the potential?

He's 6'9 and a mobile big man who truly just looks the part. He has his moments where he just can't be contained and uses all of his size. But other times where he's going through the motions. He has to get rid of that as there aren't many prospects in the state with his kind of upside. We've seen him in games where he goes through the lane and dunks, grabs boards that nobody else can get to, and seals guys for easy paint finishes. But we want that motor and consistency to keep that going, and he can do that. In the game against Pueblo West, his size will be the difference as it always is. Excited to see if he starts this one out with a big performance and builds off of it.

Will both Stump brothers stand out?

Pueblo West already picked up a playoff win and is going against one of the top teams in the state. [player_tooltip player_id='2697273' first='Ezekiel' last='Stump'] is the brother who gets plenty of attention as he averages 15.4 points a game, which is the team-high, but [player_tooltip player_id='2478519' first='Malachi' last='Stump'] will have to be special if they want to stand a chance. Malachi has had a solid season as he's putting up 10.6 points a game, and he's been very steady throughout his entire career. He will want to go out with a bang. He's had games where he's excluded offensively. He shoots the 3-ball, attacks with the ball in his hands, and creates in iso situations. He'll have to be instinctive and have his best game of his career to pull off the upset. Solid career for him.
