Season Preview: Bishop Gorman

LV Orange (BG) went 2-1 at The Border League. They lost their first game to Bishop O'Connell 66-56. But bounced back and won their next two games over RCA National and SoCal Academy. However they have had a few key players from last year's squad depart. Including Nick Jefferson and Chris Baudreau who are both now in college playing basketball. They also lost Trey McKinney III who transferred to Millennium (AZ) and Fred Jones Jr. who transferred to Palo Verde. In addition to those departures, they will not have [player_tooltip player_id='1511462' first='Jett' last='Washington'], Oregon football commit, on the roster. Who played a vital role in their last two state championship runs.   With all of that said, they still have a very talented roster that will be tough to contain. Their potential guards, [player_tooltip player_id='2086139' first='Tyler' last='Johnson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2370258' first='Dino' last='Roberts'] are both high level competitors that can get a bucket. And they are bulldogs on defense. They also have premier shooters in [player_tooltip player_id='2047786' first='Kameron' last='Cooper'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1965271' first='Hudson' last='Dannels']. And the Gaels will be at their most dangerous when both of them are hitting. At the center position, the Gaels have added [player_tooltip player_id='1266706' first='Tyler' last='Bright'] who played at The Rock in Florida last season. He can shoot over defenders on offense, and he covers ground quickly on defense with his long strides and long arms.   The Gaels then have a deep bench. Which includes guys like [player_tooltip player_id='2374170' first='Dillon' last='Ritchie'], [player_tooltip player_id='2691549' first='Canon' last='Mullen'], [player_tooltip player_id='2618033' first='Gabriel' last='Barisic'], [player_tooltip player_id='2654821' first='Braylen' last='Williams'], [player_tooltip player_id='2450360' first='Noah' last='Grossman'], [player_tooltip player_id='2918858' first='Brevynn' last='Johnson'], [player_tooltip player_id='2813465' first='Logan' last='Lefkowitz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2877359' first='Aiden' last='Acuna'].   Considering their experience, size, and offensive capabilities. Bishop Gorman may be ready to make another deep playoff run.   Notable Match Ups   Harvard Westlake - 11/28   Layton Christian Academy - 12/16   Sunnyslope - 1/1   Coronado - 1/10   Mojave - 1/13   Rolling Hills Prep - 1/23   Taking A Closer Look At The Potential Roster    [player_tooltip player_id='2047786' first='Kameron' last='Cooper'] is stepping into an even bigger role this season for the Gaels. He will likely be getting up a few more shots than last year, and may be their leading scorer. He is also a crucial player for their success on defense. As he's very vocal when he needs to be and he can also cause turnovers with his wingspan.     [player_tooltip player_id='2370258' first='Dino' last='Roberts'] is a hard working 2 way player. On offense, he can make crafty maneuvers to get near the cup. He also absorbs contact like a running back, and gets 3-point play chances when he converts tough finishes. As a defender, he can get physical if he needs to and doesn't give up ground easily.     [player_tooltip player_id='2654821' first='Braylen' last='Williams'] will be a versatile piece for Bishop Gorman this year. He uses his IQ to get to his spots on offense and he can knock down shots from the perimeter as well. On the other end of the court, Williams can guard 1-3 thanks to his size, wingspan, and lateral quickness.     [player_tooltip player_id='2086139' first='Tyler' last='Johnson'] is now running the show for Bishop Gorman. The shifty PG can utilize his explosive first step to get all the way to the basket for a slam dunk or acrobatic lay-up. Or he can dish it off if there's help defense closing in on him. The reigning Defender Of The Year will also look to create momentum for his team by sparking transition with steals or blocks.     [player_tooltip player_id='1266706' first='Tyler' last='Bright'] will be the Gaels starting center this season. He is easily one of the taller players in 5A, which gives him a significant rebounding advantage against most teams. He can also utilize a variety of post moves and pivots to score on offense. While he'll be asked to be the rim protector on defense.     [player_tooltip player_id='1965271' first='Hudson' last='Dannels'] is also moving into an expanded role for the Gaels. He will be a bit more featured this season, and for good reason. The 6'7 stretch 4 lit it up during the Nike circuit this summer, and he also played well during Section 7 and The Border League. Expect him to be one of the top 3-point shooters in all of 5A despite just being a sophomore.     [player_tooltip player_id='2691549' first='Canon' last='Mullen'] is a new addition to the Bishop Gorman Gaels. He does a little bit of everything to contribute. On offense, he is capable of hitting shots from the inside. And he occasionally scores in the insides as well by cutting or coming up with a board. On defense, he leverages his height and length to make his man uncomfortable.     The 2029 combo guard will look to make an impact by bringing his energy and athleticism to the table. He is a lob threat on offense and can throw down putback dunks as well. He's also the type of play who can get downhill and make a tough finish. Or draw contact and get to the line. All in all, there is a lot to like about the freshman.     [player_tooltip player_id='2450360' first='Noah' last='Grossman'] is an elite athlete that also competes with relentless energy. If he's looking to score, he can connect on 3-pointers. Or he will slash into the paint and use his vertical or footwork from there. His jumping abilities also allow him to alter shots on defense and he can come down with rebounds.     [player_tooltip player_id='2374170' first='Dillon' last='Ritchie'] is a difficult guard to stop in the open court. And he can get all the way to the cup if the opposing team doesn't react in time. Once he's near the basket, he is usually in dunk mode and can bounce up in a split second. On defense, Ritchie applies ball pressure and is capable of forcing turnovers.     [player_tooltip player_id='2618033' first='Gabriel' last='Barisic'] transferred to Bishop Gorman during the summer. He gives them more depth at the forward position. As he's about 6'7 and he also has a decent shooting stroke from 3 point land. Barisic may be able to make contributions on defense by helping clog up the paint and by battling for rebounds.     [player_tooltip player_id='2813465' first='Logan' last='Lefkowitz'] is a marksmen from beyond the arc. He floats and moves around off ball to look for catch and shoot 3-point opportunities. He also hustles on defense and doesn't take possessions off.     [player_tooltip player_id='2877359' first='Aiden' last='Acuna'] makes smart passes when he has the rock in transition. He also keeps his eyes up as he drives to the hoop and can dump it off to a teammate on the block for an easy bucket. Acuna can also drop in shots himself from the outside if left open.       Penn Staker Brooks will likely make an impact by burying shots from downtown. He has a fairly consistent shooting stroke and you can tell that he's been putting in the work this offseason. He may also be able to help push the ball up the floor after turnovers.
