Phenom Hoops and the Seros Agency teamed up to hold the Phenom/Seros Open at Henrico Sports and Events Center this past weekend, with some of the top teams from the state and beyond in attendance.

Here's a look at part one of some of the underclass standouts we saw at the event, some players we believe coaches should keep a close eye on moving forward this summer.

Joel Richardson | 6'2” PG | Team [program_tooltip program_id='2416185' first='Loaded' last='804'] 17U (2027)

Richardson is a player that I was impressed with, one of two sophomores playing up on this 804 team that were very productive for the group. At 6'2” he has good size in the backcourt with long arms that allowed him to challenge shots and create chaos on the defensive end. He went north-south well and touched the paint to make plays, he scored it well at the rim and in the midrange and he made others better with his vision and playmaking.

[player_tooltip player_id='2898030' first='Abram' last='Schrinel'] | 6'5” WF | Team [program_tooltip program_id='2416185' first='Loaded' last='804'] 17U (2027)

Schrinel was the other guy who played up on 804 and was very impressive, as he showed a great motor and did a lot of little things to help his team win. At 6'5” he played much taller than he is as he attacked the glass and ripped down rebounds on both ends of the floor, often grabbing contested rebounds from bigger players. He showed the ability to knock down open shots from deep, moved well off the ball, crashed the offensive glass for extra opportunities and brought great energy defensively.

[player_tooltip player_id='2470549' first='Makel' last='Minor'] | 6'2” CG | [program_tooltip program_id='2226307' first='Team' last='Loaded VA'] 16U

Minor is coming off a big sophomore season at Bishop O'Connell, and if he plays the way he did this past weekend throughout the summer he could be in the conversation as a nationally ranked player. The 6'2” combo is a walking bucket who can score it in any way imaginable, and he showed he can fill it up in bunches and also didn't go through long scoring droughts. He showed range off the bounce from well beyond the NBA line, he showed the ability to turn the corner and get to the rim, he made pull-ups and floaters in the midrange and he got to the line a lot for easy points too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2353620' first='Troy' last='Tomlin'] | 6'5” WF | [program_tooltip program_id='2226307' first='Team' last='Loaded VA'] 16U

Tomlin came into high school at PVI as a highly touted prospect, but on a nationally ranked team he was stuck behind some guys, and so far this summer he's shown he is one of the best prospects in the 2027 class in VA. The 6'5” wing is one of the most explosive players in the state, and he showed that playing above the rim effortlessly and with authority regularly. He shot the ball very well from deep off the catch, he was fantastic defensively getting deflections and blocking shots and his style of play brought big energy to his team when he needed it.

[player_tooltip player_id='2470566' first='Brady' last='Burnette'] | 6'3” WG | [program_tooltip program_id='2226307' first='Team' last='Loaded VA'] 16U

Burnette is coming off a good sophomore season for St. Chris, and he showed he's ready to make a name for himself on the 3SSB Circuit as well. The 6'3” off guard is known as a specialist with his ability to make shots at a high clip from deep, but he continues to add to his game to make him more impactful. He played with a high motor and IQ defensively jumping passing lanes and getting deflections, he made good reads and delivered passes on point and while he showed his shooting ability he also showed an improvement in his ability to attack closeouts and finish at the rim and in the midrange.

Ashton Graves | 6'3” CG | New World 16U

Graves is one of the best young guards in the DMV, and after leading New World to a 15U 3SSB Championship last year he's looking to bring his talented team to a repeat in 16U this year. At 6'3” with long arms Graves is best described as “dynamic,” as he used his athleticism and size to get downhill and put pressure on the defense regularly. He showed his ability to score it in bunches from all three levels, he used his size defensively to make plays and he made plays for others as well.
