Here are a few notable 17U players from the first session who should be on your radar heading into session two.
The electric scoring guard lit it up from 3-point in the first session. He has the ability to work off the dribble and create space but did a lot of damage running off screens, drilling shots off the catch, and moving without the ball to free himself up behind the arc.
He’s a tough point guard who showed he can create going downhill and finished some tough buckets at the rim in the opening session. Elston also handled pressure well, evaded double teams and traps, and showed off some range from 3. He looked pretty aggressive searching for his shot and is a kid to watch in the next session.
Highlights
Scott is an athletic guard who did a little bit of everything for Meta Hoops down in Oakland. He showed a great desire to rebound on both ends, walked into some 3s, finished high and strong at the cup, and showed good vision up the court in transition.
Collins lays claim to probably the best poster of the first session and was all over the rim for the Greyhounds all weekend. He’s a freakish athlete who plays hard, can stretch the floor with extended range, and is a factor around the rim on both ends.
Highlights
Walker showed off that long-range shooting we’re accustomed too but also made some aggressive plays in passing lanes to force turnovers and keep the pace high. He made nice dishes from different spots on the floor in the half court to pick out cutters for assists, and is a guy who can get hot at any time with the jumper.
The tall guard was especially deadly as a rhythm shooter over the opening weekend, hitting from all over the floor with midrange jumpers and some deep 3s. He can put a lot of pressure on defenses to extend and keep track of him off the ball with his ability to get his shot off and hit from any spot.
Here’s another kid who played solid all-around basketball in Oakland. He was a consistent defender on and off the ball, was efficient with his touches, and showed he can score inside and out. He’s looked very poised this spring, making smart plays on both ends of the court.
Mwale is a good rebounding forward who can stretch the floor a bit and showed some ability to work off the bounce and attack gaps to the hoop. He’s a versatile player who can play around the hoop, on the perimeter, and guard a multitude of positions on the other end.
The big forward for Local Hoops has looked real strong inside, rebounding, defending the rim, and providing some high-efficiency finishing. He’s a strong kid who can hold his position inside, work well off the pick and roll, and works hard to get end to end.
He’s a skilled forward who can finish strong in the paint, has some nice touch away from the hoop and out to 3-point range, and shows he can thread passes to cutters from the high post and short corner.
Weir has been an active shot-blocker at the rim and has some good burst and bounce to attack shots. He can stretch the floor at times but is also strong on the blocks and has the mobility to run the floor and get involved in transition.
