The electric scoring guard lit it up from 3-point in the first session. He has the ability to work off the dribble and create space but did a lot of damage running off screens, drilling shots off the catch, and moving without the ball to free himself up behind the arc.

Johnson showed up big in another rematch against league foe Sammamish last Friday night. After splitting the season series, Renton was able to edge Sammamish in the KingCo tournament finale and their junior guard had a big game scoring the ball. He got hot from 3PT early on, drilling his first shot from behind the arc and continuing to make it rain throughout the game. He hit off the catch, created space off the bounce, and even splashed one in after a loose ball rolled his way. He was more than just a shooter though and made his mark at the rim by getting out on breaks, anticipating breakout opportunities and getting ahead of the defense for easy two’s. Look for Johnson to continue lighting it up as Renton has clinched a state berth after beating Franklin Pierce Tuesday night.

The lefty guard leads a deep Renton team and can explode for big scoring nights at any time. He’s a stroker from deep, crafty going to the rim, and has some disruptive length on the ball defensively. Renton came up short at the state tournament last year, but Johnson has all the tools to lead them back and be one of the top players in the 2A again.

He was a shooter at the Expo, which is no suprise considering he was among the state leaders in threes made last year. Not only did he make them, he made deep ones showing his range. He isn’t just a shooter, he was active on the boards and played defense. He is set up to have a huge year for a Renton team that could be a 2A contender this season.

He has continued to improve and now is one of the top scorers in his class. The lefty has a quick shot that he can hit off the dribble or on the catch and isn’t easily bothered by contests. He’s shown an improving ability to finish through contact at the rim and use his body to create better shooting windows, contorting to finish from tough angles. He’s also an impact defender with his long arms and good timing to poke balls free and disrupt ballhandlers.

Easily the most impressive scorer in the 16U division, Johnson was nearly automatic at times, raining in high-arching shots from deep, showing awesome quickness and handle to capitalize on his length at the rim, and using the extra attention from the defense to dish to open teammates. He is high-end talent in his class and showed exactly why throughout the weekend, helping his Renton Select team finish at the top of the table.
