Here’s a look at players who shined during the matchup:
McCaffery has steadily improved during his two-plus prep seasons. Sunday, he showed increased strength, which helps him on both ends of the court. He finishes more consistently through contact and can body up opponents defensively before swatting their shots. He netted a 20 points in this contest, according to Your Prep Sports.
Koch is an efficient two-way guard with a good understanding of the game and an ability to succeed no matter the game’s pace. He shows a picture-perfect jump shot with a quick release. He has handles, moves well without the ball and finds open teammates. He’s a guard that can help plenty of programs at the next level. He connected on 10 of 14 field-goal attempts in this game, including splashing in 5 of 7 trey tries.
Highlights
It was good seeing Earl healthy again after battling injuries the last few seasons. His strength gains were noticeable, making him more effective in the lane and on the low block. His ball handling has taken a step forward and pairs nicely with a quick first step. Earl is a solid defender and rebounder. He contributed 14 points in this contest.
Coach Steven Bergman and the Trojans usually boast at least a few younger players that jump out at you. Goering is one of those dudes. He’s every bit of the 6-5 at which he’s listed on the West roster with long arms and athleticism. With a lineup of established players, he blends in well with the group as a tenacious rebounder and defensive presence on multiple levels. He snared a a game-high nine boards and added six points on 3 of 4 shooting from the floor.

Washpun is a familiar name in Iowa City basketball circles, and this freshman certainly is upholding it. Jerimiah Washpun Jerimiah Washpun 5’10” | PG Liberty | 2027 State IA caught my eye as soon as he came off the bench Sunday. He played with confidence and poise beyond his years with a strong set of basketball skills, too. He’s quick and changes speeds well, helping him utilize his handles. He’s a pest on defense. He knocked down 3 triples on four attempts and finished with a team-best 14 points Sunday.
Highlights
Coapstick displays a really good feel for the game as a lead guard. He’s very quick and can break down defense off of the bounce. He sees the floor well and delivers accurate passes where his teammates can use them. Coapstick owns a nice vertical leap, which allows him to rise above bigger defenders to get off his shot. He knocked down his lone three-point try in this game.
I’ve enjoyed witnessing Hughes’ progression throughout his prep career. He started out hanging out on the wing and corners, looking to show off his deep shooting skills. While he’s kept that ability, he gets to the basket more these days and has become an improved defender. He shared the team-lead in rebounding Sunday and found ways to help the Lightning on a night when his shot was not falling.
