is easily one of the best scorers in the state, and he showed against the Dragons on Saturday.
With the ability to score at all three levels, create separation to get a shot off on the perimeter, drive and finish at the rim and get out in transition for easy layups, Washpun was the best player on the floor in Liberty’s matchup with Johnston. Finishing with 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor and five-of-eight shooting from three, Washpun got some tough shots to go with a hand in his face and good defense from Johnston.

In that same game, Washpun was also fantastic, scoring 40 points on 16-31 shooting (6-11 3P, 2-3 FT), with 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. One of the most talented juniors in the state, he showed improvement in his perimeter jumper, knocking down six 3-pointers and doing so both off the dribble and the catch. He’s great with the ball in his hands, getting to his spots off the dribble whenever he wants, and he has fantastic body control around the rim. At one point in the second half, Washpun made eight straight shots to keep the Lightning alive in the game. In addition to his immense talent as a scoring threat, he’s a gifted playmaker who sees the floor extremely well and puts his teammates in good positions.

Jeremiah Wasphun was a scoring machine in the first game of the season. He was elite behind the three-point line and has deep range as a shooter. If given any space, he was able to get his shot off and cash in at a high rate. Both in the mid-range and behind the arc, he was a lethal sniper with high efficiency even when contested. His mid-range scoring was unguardable in this game. His touch is soft on these shots and he can finish through and over contests with tough fadeaways. He was great at using his body and footwork to create space for himself inside the arc. And this ability to finish through contact was also very showing at the rim, where he got paint touches at will and finished through thickets of defenders like it was nothing. Even at high speeds his touch didn’t waver. He was elite at shoving defenders out of the way while sprinting downhill and still finishing at a high clip. Jeremiah Wasphun had 40 points in this game, showing his scoring chops. And with his skill set, more games like this are only inevitable.

A quick guard with great handles, Washpun is able to create his own shot about as well as anyone in the state. He’s especially dangerous in the mid-range, where he can stop on a dime and elevate into his jumper. As he continues to extend his range with some consistency out to the 3-point line, he’ll only become a more dangerous offensive weapon. He averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game as a sophomore for the Lightning on 47-27-63 shooting.

was unstoppable for the entirety of Saturday’s games. Jerimiah is the definition of a three-level scorer. He was pulling from deep range and cashing in at a high clip. He was such a threat from outside that he was drawing fouls on his three-point attempts. This opened up his driving game, where he finished many tough layups. He is an elite vertical athlete, which made slowing him down around the rim extremely difficult. His ability to get a bucket anywhere on the court allowed him to capitalize with his great passing vision. In the pick and roll, he was dicing defenses up and making quick but savvy reads. His passing around the interior very much stood out; he was able to draw extra defenders and wrap dimes around their frames on many occasions. Defense was another bright spot for him on Saturday. He hounded opposing ball handlers and got in passing lanes for many takeaways. In every contest I watched, Jerimiah Waspun dominated.

A quick, athletic guard who thrives by playing downhill and using his combination of ball-handling, a quick first step, and ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his shot, Washpun is a dynamic scorer and playmaker. He averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game last season for the Lightning and could be among the leading scorers in the class as a junior.
