This isn’t necessarily the best of 2027, but here are a few freshmen who have stood out in the first 2 weeks of the season, in the games I’ve watched:
Darrell Davis | 5’11 G 2027 Archbishop Carroll
After making his way up from Maryland this fall, Davis has already solidified himself as a top player in the local class. Defense is his calling card. He locks down the point-of-attack with his quickness and speed. Davis has the speed on-ball and vision to run point on offense, but his off-ball shooting allows him to blend well with Carroll’s other guards.
Silas Graham Silas Graham 6'4" | CG Haverford | 2027 PA | 6’4 G 2027 Haverford School
Technically, Graham stepped onto the scene a year ago when he started for the Fords as an 8th grader. But his play thus far warrants discussion. As a defender, his ability to slide his feet laterally on-ball and his aggressive off-ball instincts make him a havoc creator on that end. Graham’s offensive flashes are there too. Without a crafty handle, he has the burst to get into the lane and score one way or another.
Marvin Reed Marvin Reed 5'10" | PG Malvern Prep | 2027 PA | 5’11 G 2027 Malvern Prep
Pure speed. It’s still early, but from the first game of the season, Reed has given problems to upperclassmen guards with how fast he is on defense. He flusters guys by cutting them off in either direction, leading to turnovers. His speed has been an asset on the other end too. Reed is effective attacking on-the-go where he can dash to the hoop in 1-2 dribbles. He’s going to be fun when the handle catches up to the speed.
Semaj Stone Semaj Stone 6'2" | SG Archbishop Ryan | 2027 PA | 6’2 G Archbishop Ryan
The second man off the bench for Ryan’s season opener versus Penn Charter, Stone impacted the game immediately. He splashed a spot-up three, then made some tough transition layups. On the other end, he came away with two rebounds and 2 steals, as the Raiders got the big win at home. Stone didn’t have as big of a splash in his other games so far, but the flashes are there. He flowed that up with solid two-way performances in Ryan’s games that followed.
Tyler Sutton Tyler Sutton 6'1" | CG George School | 2027 PA | 6’1 G 2027 George School
Some of the fanfare around Sutton this fall and in the preseason were justified. From game one of his season, he’s played an exciting brand of ball, particularly with his highlight reel passes and crafty finishes. But as much as he’s celebrated for his offense, Sutton is an awesome defender. His dynamic movement skills allow him to stay in front of whoever he’s on and he’s able to swipe the ball away for quick transition buckets.
